Code P1603 V70-XC70 2001

I got a "engine system service urgent" message last night driving home. The car acted and drove fine the 10 miles after the message came on. I had a code reader pull the P1603 code but it will only say that it is a "manufacturer specific powertrain code". Does anyone know what this code stands for?

Thanks!!

You are in luck because your code is stored in the car computer. I had 1603 about a couple of months ago. Take it to the dealer and they will replace the ETM under the extended warranty (200k miles, 10 years) after reading this code. ETM job is about 2.5-3 hours.

Arm yourself with more of the ETM knowledge prior to visiting the dealer. It may help you in discussions with them.

Here is link on volvoxc including my 1603 code + ETM replacement experience.

Your code description is "throttle mechanics high friction fault" Corresponding to volvo code ECM-91A7. Do not walk but run to
http://www.vexedvolvo.org/ for the bad news and the good news. You've got lots to read and a letter from Volvo in your future.

Code P1603 V70-XC70 2001

I just found this info on the vexedvolvo.org site in the troubleshooting topic,

ECM-91A7

This fault is detected by the ETM and uses the power consumption of the throttle motor, to determine possible high friction. This fault can be caused by dirt build up in the throttle housing, or by a low battery voltage, use Freeze frames and VIDA fault tracing to analyze and remedy the problem.

I would suggest you check battery voltage and connections first.

Most likely a throttle body issue (ETM?) as 1600 is "Electronic Throttle Actuator" and 1604 is "Electronic Throttle Body Computer." I can find no codes for those between the 2 numbers.
