P0340 Cel and no start S70

Last Sunday I was running errands when my 98 S70 T5 (98 k miles) would not start. It would turn over but not fire. I got a ride home and had supper, went back to car and she started right up but had a CEL P0340 "camshaft position sensor malfunction".

I had is cleared and have put on another 175 miles with no problems or CEL.

Am I going to need to replaces the sensor or is this a fluke? What caused the no start? If it happens again will disconnecting the battery clear the code and problem?

Any advise Will be appreciated.

Cam position sensor causes a no start, because the engine is in "survival mode" when it loses contact with a particularly sensitive part of the top end.

If, for instance, the cam were out of position, the engine would not start. When the sensor loses contact, the engine (ECU) has to assume the worse, and will fail to start.

Disconnecting batter will do you no good. If the code re-appears, you will be stranded! Buy a Equus Innova 3100 ODBII code reader for $100.

Plan on budgeting for the CPS too.

So if the code and problem reappear, replace the cps?? I see there are two torx bolts holding it in places. Do I need to remove the air box and anything else to replace??

Will clearing the code with the OBD get me going again, if it does happen again??

      Thanks,

Disconnecting the battery to clear codes is a no-no in my book. You never know which codes were set! Try unplugging the CPS and cleaning the contacts, then put some di-electric grease on them before remating. Check the wires for cracks in the insulation and use elec tape to cover them if needed.
