850 with turbo/oil problems...need advice 850 1996

96 850 turbo 170K is leaking oil from turbo. Exhaust smokes heavily when accelerate from stop light. Also experienced a significant drop in MPG. Mechanic says oil leaking in 3 places and oil in turbo system and wants to replace complete turbo. Already had turbo and rear main seal replaced at 130K. This time though, no major exterior oil leaks under rear main seal. Pretty reputable/reliable mechanic but can't really afford $2000 in repairs right now. What should I do?

1. Fix all leaks and replace seals
2. Fix all leaks and replace seals, replace turbo
3. Fix all leaks and replace seals, rebuild turbo
4. Other options

hang on a second 170k and turbo replaced at 130k...turbo life 40k...shouldnt be

either its faulty, you have run it out of oil...or they didnt replace the feedpipes as per you should and its eaten some coke and shreded itself...

alternatives include a partially blocked intake or exhaust BOTH of which can cause a turbo to leak oil.....

sounds like you need to ask exactly whats wrong with the turbo! a faiing cat could give you the symptoms if its braking up and sticking another turbo on wont solve that!

you should get WAY more than 40k out of a turbo!

i would also suspect crank case presurisation if its leaking in three palces AND the turbo, cleaned out the PCV system - if not an hour on a sunny afternoon might cure it all...you never know....

Get rid of it because if you dont do you own repairs on these cars you will go broke. Its one problem after another with these cars. They make Volvo rich and us poor. I do most of my own repairs and they never end. The 850 looks nice but they are loaded with problems as you know.

I agree with MadeinAmerica. If I paid someone to do all the work I do on my 850, I'd be broke. Of course I wouldn't need the million dollars worth of tools I have.
