850 Turbo PCV system & rear main seal. Experts?? 850

Hello all,

I have a 1995 850 Turbo and the rear main seal has been leaking for some time (pretty badly). I finally plan to replace it this weekend, but I'm wondering if the PCV system is up to par as well. The car has 141k miles on it (I have owned it from 102k and have always changed the oil @ 3k). Anyway, I tried the old test from the 240 and 740 days of removing the oil cap with the engine idling. The cap sits still (doesn't really suck down, but doesn't blow off either). I know this car doesn't use a flame trap, so I'm wondering what else I should check into (I tried a search on here, but all of the found posts were dealing with non-turbo 850's with a slightly different PCV system). Should I go ahead with the seal replacement, or will the new one leak due to PCV problems? As I said, there is no pressure in the crankcase (no dipstick blowing out or oil cap leaking). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Leon

Do a search on PCT at the top of the page.

Klaus,

Thanks for the reply. I recently replaced the entire fresh air hose (PTC nipple and all). Is that the only area to be concerned with (any other hoses that plug up)? I know that the breather box on the side of the block used to plug up on the 240 and 740/760 turbo's. Could that need to be replaced, or are they less troublesome on the 850 turbo?

Thanks again,

Leon

Its not easy to get to, the exhaust manifold needs to come off. That breather tube does get clogged and there are a few old posts, like the one gentleman who replaced the plastic tube with copper tubing.

If you don't find your answer here go over to www.volvospeed.com and enter their forum (message board) and do a search for pcv there. I went over there for information on how to do my replacement on the S70 which I did last month. Also, you can call the folks at www.fcpgroton.com and talk to them. They sell a kit that has all the parts you need for the replacement. From there you'll figure out what needs to be done too...just remember to buy a intake manifold gasket. The kit doesn't come with one. Replacing the intake hose with the nipple is a great idea (the larger diameter hose from the air cleaner/MAF to the turbo, but it's expensive and usually you can clean the nipple and not replace the whole piece) but that's just the beginning of the pcv piping. You also have the oil trap and related hoses to that nipple, the turbo and to the top of the engine from the oil trap. Hope this all helps.
