Innocent Amsoil Question V70-XC70 1998

I've been lurking around the board for about a year now because it's such a teriffic resouce. Lately I've been considering the pros and cons of switching the high mile 98 V70 T5 over to synthetic, and the information in the brickboard archives has served as one of many resources. Always used dino (not by design, but by default), and if I were to switch, I figured I'd use Mobil 1. My head must be buried in the sand, but I hadn't ever heard of Amsoil. But many here appear to prefer it over Mobil 1.

After reading pages and pages of testimonials, I started to look for a place to buy Amsoil and quickly learned that it's apparently sold primairly by "dealers." Went back to the sources, and saw that many of those who were singing it's praises were also "dealers." Then it hit me - as best I can tell, Amsoil is kind of like Mary Kay for car junkies. Don't mean that as an insult - it's just that the sales structure seems to be similar, both sell "premium" products that are, by most accounts, very good - and have earned this reputation by word-of-mouth.

I pose this question here becuase it drastically changes the way I look at oil advise on this board when I understand that many of the people who are saying it's OK to switch to synthetic @ 108K have a vested interest in a particular product. After all, like many here, I look to the brickboard for unbiased advise that comes from experience. Not trying to ruffle any feathers. Just looking for opinions on the matter. I'm sure I'll get 'em.

I agree with most of the other posts suggesting that dino oil is fine (as long as you change frequently). That said, I still use Mobil 1 in my 850 turbo. My thought is, Mobil 1 is overkill and, if Amsoil is better than Mobil 1 (which I have my doubts because you are correct that most of the info is advertising), it is overkill on top of overkill. BTW, I had no trouble changing to Mobil 1 with my 850 turbo at 30K AND with my 240 at 120K (although I no longer bother with the 240.

A few on-line sources of info:

Paradise Garage is doing a long term study of synthetics. They had some viscosity problems with Amsoil. Mobil 1 passed with flying colors. Go to http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

"Bob Is The Oil Guy" has some comments about Amsoil. You might want to check them out at www.bobistheyoilguy.com. Not everything Amsoil sells is API licensed. Bob has some thoughts on that and the problems it might cause.

Most of the on-line testimonials of Amsoil are actually "dealer" advertising.

I don't know that Irv Gordon ever used synthetics in his 2,000,000 mile Volvo.

      correction:

Bobistheyoilguy.com is a website with some general and very technical info on motor oils.

A discussion of Amsoil and it's API licensing is in another website...

Oil is like wine, you pay for the label.

My best friend has a 1985 bmw 735 with 350K miles, original engine and always used conventional oil, no sythetic ever.

I've switched several high milage engines (> 100K) to syn w/o a hint of a problem. I've always used Mobil 1 just because it's so easy to get off the shelf. I doubt there's all that much difference in the "big three" syns quality wise (M1, Amsol & Redline) with each having it's loyal following. You may get more responses by putting your post over on the 700-900 forum as well. Several guys over there are into Amsol and will give you the straight poop.
