Oh Boy, if you don't have the ext. warranty, or are not keen to pay over $100 for a freakin' cupholder, you are in for a "thirsty" ride. I just had the same thing happen...apparently Volvo uses recycled plastic parts (which is good for the environment, but not good for us if they don't hold up). There is nowhere that I know of to get the part besides a dealer (but experts on this board may know a trick or two). The list on this part is $62.19 ( part # 30641349), but the worst part is not the actual price of the damn thing (as if that wasn't bad enough)...it was an hour's worth of labor. The console cover has to come off to replace it, my Volvo guy told me it was a bi#@h, and I think he said the radio had to come out too! You better have somebody who's done it before have at it, because if the faceplate gets cracked or broken while coming off or going back on, that's gonna hurt your wallet more than the cupholder! (Especially if you have the faux 'burled walnut' trim package!!!)
Luckily, I had the extended warranty, and with a little know-how on the part of my service dept, they got the miserly warranty folks to cover the part and some of the labor. If you have the warranty, you CANNOT just say that a plastic part broke, or they won't cover it! How it was worded in my case was that the folding pop-out mechanism failed and the springs fell out(true, but because the damn plastic part broke in the first place!) If you just say the plastic parts broke, they will asssume it was because someone tried put a Big Gulp or something like that in it; but if the mechanism failed they will cover it...strange but true. One thing you may be able to do if you don't have an ext. warranty (it'll cost you at least $125 without one) is to see if you can find a V40 or an S40 in a junkyard and have a go at removing the faceplate & whatnot, and getting the intact cupholder out... but be careful, as I said, these parts are plastic and getting them out or in can be tricky! I decided not to do that because the used cupholder you wind up with might crack two days after you go through all that trouble. At least with a new part you have some protection against that sort of thing. But no matter how you get it fixed,(IF you decide it's worth the $ to fix it) DON'T put anything bigger or heavier than a can of soda in it, or anything too hot. I think that shortens the cupholder life...the lady I got my V40 from used to drive around with HUGE hot coffees all the time. Unfortunately, it waited to give out on me (with only a little ol' can of Red Bull in it).
Good Luck!
