Hot air entering cabin-recirc not working-Air-con switching on/off 850

Hi ya all,
Two questions regarding Air con.
Can someone tell me if this is a common problem in these 850's or a problem I need to work out.
I'm in Australia and we've just experienced 42C the other day. After turning on the Air-con I noticed the higher the fan speed the more noticeable the problem became, which was the air-con compressor was turning on and off as if the thermostat had reached some temp but inside the car it was still hot and hot air was blowing in.And because I had repaired the recirc mechanism in the past I thought I wouldn't feel outside air entering while travelling -obviously its either broken again or the seal for the recirc door isn't good enough -does any one else have this problem as well? or do you know what the causes might be and to fix it for good?

My guess is that the thermostat is playing up with the aircon-but I don't know where it might be!
or what the job may entail. If there's someone out there that has had any experience in this fault I'm grateful for your feed back.

Check the plastic cover behind the engine compartment. Mine had warped on the passenger side and was allowing hot engine compartment air to be pushed in right in front of the cabin air intake. An extra screw down through the cover closed the gap.

Don't know if this will help or not but I have also been up under the dash working on the recirc door. And as you probably know, the light by the recirc switch is showing the position of the switch, not the door. In other words, the door may or may not be closed if the connecting link has fallen off(again) but the lite indicates the door is closed. I can feel a small pressure bump when the door opens at highway speed and lets in the higher pressure from the outside air rushing in. Very small change but my ears can detect it. Seems like I remember getting chart from somewhere showing what temp air was supposed to be coming thru the outlets and that may be relative to the ambient outside air temp. 42C may be stretching the limits of the condenser's ability to shed the heat. How high is the humidity? Is it possible for the evaporator to have iced up and not be able to transfer a cooler product? Are the cooling fans on the radiator working properly? Ahh, so many place to spend money and time. I've already replaced the evap on my 96 850 once about five years ago and now the cost of doing that is about 1/4 the value of the car.
    Good luck.

Tucker, the Aircon works well and feels cold enough when compressor is working but then it turns off (say 5 min )@high speed fan #4.And because the recirc door doesn't close properly -outside air rushes in and hence the uncomfort heat entering in the cabin- by the way the airmix is turned off.
Madeinjapan noted it might be the gas (not enough off in system) might be the cause. I'll try that first and take it from there.
Getting back to the recirc door I was wondering if there is a seal that needs replacing as I've already fixed that broken mechanism, what do you think?

I agree with where you're going with what you posted. In the southern U.S., when it is really, really hot and humid outside, the Volvo A/C really has a hard time keeping up. Tolerable, but not comfortable a few days last summer for me too. If you add to that a slightly low gas level in the system, the compressor cycles on and off constantly and the cabin never cools down. I would make sure you have enough gas in the system first before you start trying to problem solve other areas. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I don't remember any large seal on the face of the recirc door, maybe just a foam type edging around the perimeter.
I'm not sure the fan speed has any relation to the compressor at all in terms of the lenght of cycle of the compressor. Indirectly it will affect the delivery speed of the cool air and therefore indirectly may shorten the time before the temp sensor sees what it is looking for as a match between requested temp and temp achieved. I do think that the higher fan speed may be drawing in a larger quantity of hot air while the compressor is off line than if the fan were running at a lower setting.
Seems like my old 240 had a time limit that the compressor would stay active. I think there was a warning note not to run it at "max" for maybe five minutes or so. I thought it overrode the temp sensor and just kept the compressor on steady til you felt the worst of the heat had been extracted and then you could turn it back into the "normal" range where the temp sensor determined the cycle lenght. Your problem of the compressor staying off for five minutes may be a protective cycle it goes into when it is unable to satisfy your temp sensor, and I would suspect, as the other poster mentioned, that low pressure/quantity of freon or r34 is the real culprit. I think my wallet would bet on that direction.
