850 shocks 850

two questions. Is there a definitive way to identify when the rear shocks need replacing? it's an 96 850 with about 145,000 regular use miles, still rides great and does not bounce on the springs. Seems like they are good but maybe I'm just use to the ride if they have deteriorated slowly over the years.
second question. What is a reasonable replacement shock for regular use? I don't need high performance, high technology and don't want high prices. OEM have done a good job but they are $130 a piece plus an adapter kit for about ten more. Sears and the auto stores have Monroes and Gabriels from about 35 on up to 60 a piece.
Any experiences or preferences would be welcome.
thanks

I put KYBs on the rear of my '96 850 sedan and am completely happy with them. I knew my originals needed replacing when they were leaking hydraulic fluid at 60,000 miles. The car has about 115,000 miles on it now and the KYBs are still doing very well. They seemed to calm down the jumpiness of the back end which the originals always had.

Bought the KYBs from RD Enterprises/shox.com .

I have owned both 850 and S/V 70 in older and newer series. The rear shock is really a judgment call. I hauled some beer (lots of beer) in my '98 S70 when I first bought it new and over bumps the rubber stops hit so I knew I needed mine changed. I would say if more than 80K miles, change them if you're going to do the fronts anyway. A great source is www.shox.com I bought the Bilstein Touring (TC) and am well pleased with them over the OEM and they were cheaper.

thanks for the link. I used to haul a trailer behind that was a 10x6 enclosed, not much weight but lots of drag. I've noticed the springs have bottome out also some time in the past.
are any suspension adjustments needed if front shocks are changed?

No adjustments except a front end aligment afterwards. Just make sure you change out the shock/strut mounts and you might want to look at and replace the spring seats on the front. Shox sells all of these items at a great price although they might not advertise them. Give them a call.
