rattley drive shaft 1998 V70 V70-XC70 1998

Woo - first time I've ever posted on anything!

Recently upgraded from '88 240 wagon to my super duper V70, and have since been chasing a very annoying rattle: firstly got the wheels aligned, then wheel bearing on drivers side, engine mounts on other side, new struts on both sides and control arm on driver's side . . .

Still rattles: loudly when cold or turning, quietly but much faster when cruising. Always thought it must be connected to the drive shaft, and behold, while car is up on lift and manually turning shaft back and forth, here is the rattle!

Now, how does one fix such a thing. My mechanic will install a new shaft assembly if I can find it, but he doesn't promise that it's not a tranny problem. Any hints? And how does the word U-joint come into all this??

www.fcpgroton.com has drive shafts for less than $100 with exchange of your bad one. Check them out and go to the section for your car. Here's the specific link: http://www.fcpgroton.com/CSV70/csv70driveline.htm Never heard anything bad about these either.
    Regards,

I called fcp groton but go quoted $860 for a brand new Volvo drive shaft assembly. And now the rattle has disappeared for now: it seems to come and go. Do you think there's any harm in just living with it until I get a hold of a cheaper part? Would it have any effect on the transmission being loose like this?

'98 AWD driveshafts have had lots of problems with the CV joints on them failing and causing a ticking sound.

I may have to spring for the new drive shaft assembly if this ticking gets to be much worse - are the CV joints part of the package? I think it's time for me to get a manual for this thing. Used to do my own work on my Toyota pickup - but then that only ever involved changing the spark plugs :)

Could be engine mounts in your case...never heard of a bad drive shaft suddenly being good.

makes sense, but I just had the dealer replace an engine mount that he said was basically gone. I don't suppose they would have overlooked other bad mounts? Oh well, the mystery knock goes on.... Thanks for your input.

It's possible that they didn't check all of them. The one on top is easily spotted. The others below have to have the car jacked up a bit (from under the oil pan) to plainly see.
