Solution for 850 Automatic Tranny problem! 850 1994

Awhile ago I had posted regarding a problem I was having with my 1994 Volvo 850 wagon with an automatic transmission. I had had the transmission oil changed and afterwards when I started it up first thing in the morning on days that the weather dipped below 40 degrees the transmission wouldn't shift out of first until it was warmed up (usually about 2 minutes). If I tried to manually put it into second while moving it wouldn't grab but instead shifted into neutral. Once warmed up it would be fine and shift perfectly for the rest of the day.

I did some research and somewhere read that the computer calculates shift points based on speed and amount of throttle and that it "remembers" the settings. So what I did was to 'reboot' my car by disconnecting the battery for 24 hours.

After reconnecting the battery I've never had the problem again, in spite of the fact that it rarely gets over 40 degrees here this time of year. Shifting is smooth regardless of how warmed up the car is. So if you have that problem, it may be worth a try.

    Pardon my piggy backing on this thread but it is somewhat related. I also have a 94 855...with about 168,000 miles. It is running well, uses about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles and has annoying cruse control issues in warm weather. Current concern though is we're past time to change the ATF again, based on what I've been reading here on the Brickboard. Anyway, here's the question. We have an oil extraction system where I work that uses vacuum to pull the old oil from equipment that cannot be accessed from below. Does anyone see a potential problem with using a suction system versus drain and fill or the Bay-13 method? It seems that it would be better than D&F but simpler that pressurized method. BTW, both the local Volvo shops recommended D&F and are "affraid" of the Bay-13 method. One of those shops did the last change. Also, the Jiffy Lube recommended a complete system flush that doesn't use the transmission pump to drive out the fluid. Anybody have pro or con comments on that? Thanks & Keep Pedalling.

      If you don't want a mess on your garage floor and don't feel you are technical enough to handle the Bay 13 method, using a fluid pump to get a portion of the transmission fluid helps. You may want to do a few successive attempts to draw out the transmission fluid as any one try will only pull out about 1/3 of the trans oil. So doing will replace the transmission fluid, but not the debris on the bottom, if any. But for ages, prior to all these fluid flushing machines, auto mechanics routinely only dropped the transmission pan, replaced the filter, and replenished only about 1/3 of the fluid. It was called "transmission service".

      Now the 850 doesn't have a filter and no band or valve adjustment is needed. It seems that replacing the trans oil more frequently is even more important.

      But a transmission fluid flush seems to be the better alternative although it is much more expensive than the DIY project.

      Drain and fill method only gets part of the ATF. Using a suction method would get the fluid out of the filler tube? Still, only part of the ATF.
      Bay13 flush, if done correctly, takes about 30 minutes and replaces all of the ATF AND you can do it in your own garage. Just make sure you only pump out 2 quarts at a time.
      If only your Indie would try this "modern" method of a complete flush, he would be enlightened.

    I have the exact same problem with my wife's car. The tranny started acting up after we changed the fluid about a year and a half ago. It is fine as long as the weather is warm, but as soon as it drops below about 50 degrees, it won't shift into up into 3rd until it gets warm. This is the second winter that we have had the problem. I was just about to take it to the dealer, but I'm going to try and unplug the battery for 24 hours and see what happens.

      I've never heard of that, I've replace the fluid twice and have never had a problem. I would have thought that the seals were worn and possibliy not enough fluid.

      Definitely give it a try and let me know if it works for you too. Make sure you know your radio code before you disconnect the battery, though.

    This is good info to know.
    So far no problems with the tranny in my 850T, but I always look to
    people who post "solutions" on the board.
