DTC P0410 but no CEL V70-XC70

Just ran a friends OBD2 program (Autoenginuity Scantool) briefly on my 98 V70 T5 and it returned a P0410 DTC which is for the Secondary Air Injection system. It might be the SAS valve froze open or a vac line leak but I haven't yet had a moment to look under the hood.

However, my check engine light is not on. The CEL works (it lights up when ignition is first turned on).

Is there a reason I might see a DTC but no CEL? If the problem has gone away, will the system clear the code itself after a period of time?

There are a lot of codes which will not turn on the CEL, as they require another matching error to set off the CEL. Sometimes, clearing the codes once a year or so will prevent strange CEL combinations.
What I mean to say is that not all stored codes are potential fixes. They are informative. Your SAS may have had a minor problem which went away, but the code is still stored. Do not throw good parts away, just because there is a code outstanding.
For a while, I was getting a misfire on cyl 4 which turns on the CEL. A fresh tank of gas cured it. Along with no longer going from full boost to no throttle while merging on the highway!
If your errror code comes back, think about how you were driving at the time and determine what else may have caused it.

P0410 WILL set a CEL eventually. I know this first hand.
What happens is OBDII will store the code (I think twice) before setting the CEL. Basically, the system gives the car 3 tries before setting the light. If there is no further errors after something like 10 warm up cycles then the "stored code" is erased. It's designed like this to prevent a CEL from showing up from an emissions system "hickup".
However, There are certain codes that will throw a CEL on the first sign of a problem. Misfire codes are the first to come to mind.

I'd check to make sure your pump isn't full of water and verifying proper operation. Consider drilling small holes in the bottom of the pump if you haven't don so already to drain any stray water. If the code eventually appears then look deeper into the SAS Valve.

      Good Luck
      Doug
