Transmission Blues V70-XC70 1998

98 AWD,torque converter clutch slippage, fault code PO740. Occurs at highway speed on long inclines, drops out of lock-up temporially and arrow flashes for a while, check engine stays lit. Transmission specialist sees no benefit in taking apart tranny, says live with it; regular mechanic thinks replacing the torque converter may cause even more problems and doesn't know what to do and, of course, the local Volvo dealer wants to replace the whole shebang for $5600 + tax. When I initially posted the gegining of this saga KlausC reccomended a full transmission flush and service. My question; is it worth replacing the torque converter on a vehicle thats gone 95K? Any other thoughts?
John

1998 AWD V70...Thanks all for the timely responses. Local transmission shop finally got the tranny out and discovered that the torque conver clutch bearing was shot. Time for a rebuild. Estimate for all the work is $3200. Sounds reasonable to me, any comments? Thanks again.

I'd begin by doing a trans flush with Volvos synthetic ATF as that's been known to cure some trans shifting issues especially with AWD tranny's. The fluid costs about $18 per liter and Volvo recommends 16 pts to flush it, plus 1 hour's labor if you need to pay someone, NOT cheap.
If that doesn't help, I'd also not bother trying a new torque convertor as I've never heard of those going bad in themselves with Volvo AW tranny's and the labor is the same as replacing the trans, 12 hours book time for AWD (Chiltons, Motor) so you don't want to pay that twice.

I don't know who quoted you $5,600 but the trans only costs about $2,000 or so (give or take a couple hundred) and it's 12 hours labor so even at $100 per hour, that's $1,200. If it gets to needing another reman trans, call a couple other dealers for their parts only price on the trans.

did you flush? That may clear your issues.

Is it worth it? hard question to answer, only you can validate it. You could get lots of miles out of it, but do you want to?

Ok, the issue is really the amount of labor involved in changing the t/c. The t/c itself is not that expensive. If you can pull the tranny yourself or have a resonable garage do it, it would probably be worth it. You never know with an automatic how much clutch material/metal shavings are floating around especially if the t/c has begun to fail so that is the risk of just replacing the torque converter but on the other hand it may extend the life for many thousands of miles without the $5m expense of a full replacement.
