'96 850 Wagon Running Cold 850 1996

I have noticed that during cold weather (<15F) my engine won't heat up to its normal temperature (needle on temp gage barely moves), which apparently affects the heating system (i.e., there is no or little heat). I suspect I have a bad thermostat somewhere. What's the likely culprit? Is there a downside to running the engine too cold?

The down side of not replacing the thermostat is a double whammy. Interior of car won't heat up, and ECU thinks the engine is cold, so it runs rich.

If you don't want to drain any antifreeze and just let the two quarts drain on the floor, place a cover over the altenator. I'm the dodo brain with the failed alt until the antifreeze evaporated - 2 days later.

If you do drain about a quart or 2, only drain it from the engine, not the radiator. Save it in a very clean milk container, and pour it back in the car when you are done.

Syphon out the expansion tank and you won't have much spillage at all...well worth the extra effort!

Yes you need to replace your thermostat, not good to run the engine too cold. Go to: http://www.volvospeed.com/maintence.htm A good set of instructions with pictures on how to do this simple job. You can get the thermostat at any parts store for $8-10 or from the dealer for $20. No problem with the parts store unit

Thanks. Since I'm not getting any DTC codes, should I assume that the ECT sensor is OK, and I only need to replace the thermostat? Do I really need to drain the coolant (just had that done a few month ago)?

I would just replace the thermostat, although the ECT is easier to get at when you have the housing off, if you have any doubts about it. When I replaced mine, I did not drain the coolant, just loosened the torx screws and let the coolant dribble out until it stopped (probably don't want to do this in your garage unless you have a wide pan underneath--also one post warned of getting the coolant into the alternator). Also didn't disconnect any hoses, just flexed the hose back with the housing attached, picked the old thermostat out and put the new one in. Then, top up the coolant with 50/50 mix suitable for aluminum engines (no phosphates)

There are some posts that warn of some difficulty getting the screws out, I had no problem and simply put a long extension on the torx bit for the back screw--they are tight though, so you need to put a fair amount of downward pressure on to keep the torx well engaged. Unless you run into problems should take you 30 minutes max.

I had to do mine out at an airport when the car suddenly overheated...

Just did this yesterday and replaced coolant temp sensor @ the same time. I flushed and replaced coolant one month ago and didn't replace the stat @ the same time (insert expletive here). Well the car set a code and has been running cold for about a few weeks and yesterday, wouldn't start. It's a '98 V70XC but much still applies. I drained a little more than a quart of antifreeze then released the pressure from the fuel rail & removed the connection @ the rail above the stat housing in order to get to the rear bolt on the housing. This was after I snapped some ends off my first T40 bit. Replaced temp sensor and popped in new stat and reversed my steps. Now she warms up like she's supposed to & I have a happier pregnant wife.

The most important part of your post is that you were able to make your pregnant wife happy! May you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!
