Periodic metallic noise when starting 850 1996

We have a '96 850 with 95,000 miles and just noticed a strange sound upon starting that has occurred a few times since the temperature has dropped into the 20's. Most of the time, it starts up without any problem. It is a brief sound of metal to metal shearing. It doesn't sound like a starter that been held on too long. Any ideas?

Brushes in your starter motor...Only thing I can imagine at start-up. If it were in your motor, it would persist and you would have MAJOR problems.
