Sounds (smells) like a heater core problem.

Big job to change/repair, or, Stop leak in the system will cure it for a week or as long as you own the car.

If it is a heater core the job is not that bad. With a little experience you could bang one out in a couple of hours. Radiator stop leak is a bad idea.
