94 855T turns over but won't start, stuck in Boston 850

The car drove ok to work this morning but wouldn't start when I went to leave to go home. I'm trying to get it going at least to get it back home.

The plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all new, new Optima battery and terminals. It turns over real good and I have good fuel pressure at the rail but it's not starting. The car hasn't thrown a CEL but would it still have readable codes all the same? I'm not sure how to read the A & B diagnostic ports to pull any possible codes, I'm use to a hand held OBDll scanner. In my own diagnosis from what I've read here on the BB I was thinking the camshaft position sensor might be bad and I picked one up today, I'm going to put that in as soon as day breaks. I need help and would very much appreciate any suggestions and opinions.

Wallie

try pulling the number two fuse (under the hood on the driver side)and reseating it. This is the fuel pump fuse. If that doesn't work try pulling the main engine fuse and reseating it. This works for me on my 95 850.

Test for spark (I just put coil wire near frame and hit starter). If you get spark then not cam sensor. If no spark then easy to replace sensor - although I found connecter a pain to reach.

If spark & fuel try grinding starter without letting up for a minute or even two without touching gas pedal. After about a minute you might get a cough, but keep going until really started.

Condition sort of Volvo version of flooding. I had this, went through plugs, cap, rotor, etc. Finally tried just grinding and slowly the cylinders caught - 1 then 2 then 3 and so on. Took about 1.5 minutes of grinding. No repeats since.

    Good Luck!

Check the fuel filter. If not changed and you're at or near 100K miles, it needs to be replaced anyway. If it's really cold (below freezing), any condensation in the gas line could have had an effect too. Get it into a warmer than freezing garage for a few hours and see if it will start. Other than this, could also be the fuel pump. Hope the unit (position sensor) you bought fixes the problem, but if it doesn't, I'd check the places I mention here.

As an after-thought...these cars won't start unless they are in "P," or park. Sometimes the "park to neutral" switch (P&N) can go bad and even if it looks to be in "P" it's really not. Without the ignition on, hold down the brake and roll the gear shift from P to N and back very quickly about 20 times (a temporary solution to a failing component) and then shift back to "P" and see if this does the trick.
Good luck and let us know what the problem was.

I finally got the car to start between looking on the boards and some of my own process of elimination. It almost seems like its the IAC motor causing the problem and if it is I haven't completly solved it yet. With the IAC motor unplugged the car started right up, rough but at least it started. I shut the car off and plugged the IAC back in and it started up fine although I have a CEL now from being unplugged. I still have to read codes and reset the CEL. I got home ok but then the car wouldn't start this morning. I unplugged the connector from the IAC and blew it out and the car started right up. I'm wondering if my problem could be just the dirty connector?

The fuel filter is new with all the other stuff I did although I was thinking the fuel pump at first. Can the IAC motor go bad or is it a common fault? I had good spark throughout but I picked up a CMP sensor anyway to change out the original.

Still looking for advice on the IAC connector Possibility

Sorry for the late reply. It's the idle air control motor, it's located under the throttle body cover which is held in with one torx screw. Open the hood and in front of and to the left of your air box will be the throttle body cover. The IAC is under there closest to the front of the car and long and cylindrical with two hoses and a rear connector.

Nice catch on the IAC connector. The contacts tend to corrode, especially in your humid area. Use a tooth brush, contact cleaner, and elbow grease. Then coat it with di-electric grease and plug it back together. The IAC itself doesn't fail much, so if you need another one, I would look at salvage yards.

Idle Air Control. Governs the amount of air supplied to the engine to maintain correct idle speed.
