W.......NOT Bush! V70-XC70 2002

Hi All,

Boy do I feel dumb! First snowfall since I got the XC. Not much snow but a really steep driveway.

Anyway, I thought that I'd try the "W" button to ease getting up the drive and was suprised that it felt like I was spinning my wheels. I gave it more gas and made it up but, I'm concerned that maybe something is wrong.

When depressing the "W" button does the transmission go into a low ratio mode that requires a lot more throttle to get moving?

Thanks for any advice,

Greydog

    Thanks Guys,

That's pretty much what I thought but, being new to the XC thing, I wanted to make sure everything is alright.

I can't get over how just plain nice this vehicle is! I'm slowly getting over missing the 745 T wagon.

    Thanks agian,

Sounds like it is doing what it is supposed to. I've never actually found winter mode much use. Even going up mountain to ski center. Maybe if your out ice fishing on glare ice... Or are one of those you see on the weather channel who seem to think spinning wheels get better traction if they spin faster.

Might be useful if stuck in the mud I suppose.

W locks the transmision in 2nd gear so you will not spin the wheels when you take off from start. Hence, you reduce the torque at the wheels. Meaning you have less power to go up the hill.
On the XC you don't need to go to W mode to prevent wheel spin. Everyday when I test ABS units I try to spin the wheels on my XC and it is very difficult.
You have the AWD and then you have the TRACS system to keep the traction.
