Programing the remote door opener? V70-XC70

I am thinking of buying a used remote key fob door opener. Is this something I can program by myself to work with my '98 V70 awd, or is it something I have to have a dealer do? As always, thanks

    Sorry, the bad news is that for 1998, the dealer must be involved. Borton Volvo wants about $75 to do it. Needless to say, my extra FOB doesn't work!

      Seems these programmings are very much dealer, and relationship dependent. My local dealer who is not very reputable and also known to be a "rip-off," surprisingly did both of mine for only $25. It's a good idea to become "chummy" with the service and parts departments...if you're a nobody to them, they'll charge you. If they know you and you've shot the "bull" with them and sometimes take them a box of donuts, etc., they're more apt to do this simple (at least from their perspective) task for little or nothing.

        Programing the remote door opener? V70-XC70

        I have an S90 and recently bought a "new-ish" remote from a Volvo mechanic for $50.
        He showed me how to program it:

        1. open the car and get inside, making sure to close all doors, hood and trunk;
        2. Turn the ignition on and off 5 times (don't turn the car fully on.. only to the 2nd ignition switch position);
        3. On the 5th ignition turn, hold down the lock button for a few seconds;
        4. Start the car for about 20 seconds, then turn off;
        5. Test the remote.

        I hope that works for you.
        Please let me know how that works for you.

          Your method is well documented for your car...unfortunately, for the '98 and beyond 70 series it's a dealer only item...takes a download. Lucky you!
