Timing Belt, no sweat! S70 1998

To all
I did the dreaded Timing Belt Replacement on my wife's 98 S70 Non-Turbo. It was a straighforward procedure, many thanks to Volvospeed!!!! They have a great writeup on it. Only ran into 2 snags. I did not have the Volvo tool to relax the tensioner for the Serpentine belt. After wasting about 20 minutes trying to fab something up, I just used my very large Channel-Lock pliers on it! They worked like a charm!!
The other snag was getting the New Serp. belt on the last pulley while holding the Tensioner with the Channel Locks. You just can't slip it on with your fingers. I turned the steering wheel full right and put the 30mm socket back on the Crank pulley. While still holding the Channel Locks I turned the crank pulley and Sha-Zam!! The Serp. belt rotated right on!!! Easy. In total it took me just under 3 hours to do the job, not bad. I figure closer to 2 hours for the next time.
Just wanted to share my experiences with you! A million tanks to Brickboard and Volvospeed, you guys are the best!!!

I'm glad it went well, but please heed this warning. Next time you are in the area of the timing belt (or make the time), replace the tensioner. I had my belt replaced at 100,000, but the tensioner broke at 160K and it popped 10 valves - cost me about $2500. I've seen similar instances since I started reading these sites.

Tensioner Tool for $1 S70 1998

Great you did it.

RE Tensioner Tool:

I use this thing. Basically buy a plumbing "square end". The tensioner hole is about ?? 5/8", so buy the square end with 3/4":

http://www.cimqd.com/tu/2007-0103.jpg

Use a file and file 4 sides until the square fits snugly into the SQUARE in the tensioner for the drivebelt (which is slightly larger than a 3/8 ratchet).

On the THREADED part of the square end, file OPPOSING SIDES until this allows the use of an adjustable wrench.

I keep this tool in the glovebox for lond-distance trip.

- I also keep the old drivebelt in the trunk, a great item to have just for emergency.

It works everytime. I keep this thing in the glovebox. Never know getting stuck somewhere w broken belt and need this tool.
