Masochist Volvo Engineer...low beam replacement V70-XC70 2004

I can't believe of all people I'm posting this here, but here is goes...for a '04 V70: Has anyone tried to replace their low beam light bulb (H-7)? Not only is it a really tight fit, but the little wire clasp is impossible to re-clasp. I've been at it for 2 hours this morning and can't get it to clasp. Have tried to use a screw driver, the end of a rubber hold-tool, etc. Without the bulb in there, it clasps back perfectly. Once you insert the bulb it is impossible. Anyone with any tricks on this...the ends of my fingers are bruised and bleeding from trying to get the metal wire latched...very painful to even type this. I know the bulb is the right one...it's turned up correctly in the socket too. I don't want to bend the wire, but I'm afraid I might out of frustration...then it will be a trip to the dealer....daymn....Please help.

    Just wait! V70-XC70 2004

Yes, guys, wait until you start replacing the tail lights. The ones that my 01 blows most often require severe contortion, and the blood loss involved could lead to a visit to the local ER for a transfusion. I'd still rather replace all the light bulbs a couple of times than change one more 240 heater blower...

NO....masochists enjoy RECEIVING pain! SADISTS like to INFLICT pain! But THAT was designed by... V70-XC70 2004

....Loki Laufeyjarson (*) who is Volvo's Chief Engineer In Charge of Making You Ask: "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING when they did that????"

(Think design features like the only way to get the RF headlight wiper motor out of a "classic" V70 without removing the engine and transmission is with a Dremel!)

(* Loki Laufeyjarson is the god of mischief in Norse mythology, a son of Fárbauti and Laufey. He is described as the "contriver of all fraud". Loki is in a sense both a god and a Jotun (comparable to the Titans and Gigantes of Greek mythology). He mixed freely with the gods for a long time, even becoming Odin's blood brother. The composer Richard Wagner presented Loki under an invented Germanized name Loge in his operas Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. -Wikipedia)

If the clip won't reclasp the bulb is not properly seated in the housing. Tab on bulb goes at 12:00. Try jiggling. When properly seated the clip is easy to close.

Done all of that...about to take the air cleaner box out as well as all of the other wiring that's in the way. I'm wondering of the H-7 sold at AutoZone is thicker at the base. Anyway, it's seated tight. I'm way over this thing.

Okay...about 45 minutes later. Finally got it latched. I had to take the wire out completely, bend it and then with the help of a pencil end (blunt end) and my finger, I was able to push it to latch. This was on the driver's side. I'd hate to have to do the passenger side...there is absolutely no room at all to work on that side...but that bulb is considerably dimmer than the one I replaced, so I guess that it's not long behind.

I just went through this last weekend..... I thought it was me? I am a Newbe to the V70XC world, coming from a couple of 940's... Is this all the result of the guys with a "better idea" aka Ford?
My first maintanence attempt, turned into a project......

The best was all the cable ties which were cut at the factory a to be as sharp as a razor blade! As I type this and see my hands, it looks like I was playing in the sticker bushes this weekend....... I don't believe my 940's had any cable ties, but other more humane cable mgmt methods......

I feel for you man! I did have the forsight to wear the latex goves which were shredded when I did this job...but they did save my hands. My finger tips were numb for days though, and then they peeled...thought I had some type of serious health issue (like heart problems...I'm 45)...I hadn't put 2 and 2 together to figure out that my finger tips peeling was related to this job for awhile, but all fine now.

BTW, I did replace the passenger side low beam bulb too...but somehow it only took a couple of minutes....and with no harm...cut the plastic ties first and then replaced them...learn from experience? Go figure???

Wow, not to rub in it or anything, but I recently swapped my low beam bulbs with my high beam bulbs (troubleshooting a problem with my bulb-failure-warning indicator lamp) and had no difficulty at all. Maybe your wire latches had been previously bent/damaged? Maybe your hands are really big? :)

My car is almost a twin of yours: 1998 emerald green V70 T5.

Right, but I'm talking about the '04, not the '98...the '98 was a piece of cake compared to the REALLY cramped quarters of the '04.
