850 - S70 Compatability and Suggestions 850 1996

My 850 Turbo got crunched a few months ago, and I am looking at options here.
Most of the damage was to the back end, but there is minor damage to the
grill/bumper etc. I am thinking about finding a new model S70 with a blown
engine and trashed interior as a rebuilder. Then using my 850 to fix it...
My 850 was really cherry before it got crunched.. It is the Platinum LE.
Does anybody have experience with this kind of parts changeout?
Suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. And, if anyone knows of a S70 located
on the west coast that would work, let me know..

    850 - S70 Compatability and Suggestions 850 1996

Thanks for the comments so far, they are most informative..

My initial thoughts are that I have a low-miles turbo engine, and a great
interior. Does anyone know what the actual differences are between the seats
in the 850 and S70? Is it just a case of the frame rails being different...
Maybe change out the skins etc? Are the base engines the same? ie: could I use the harness etc. off a S70 with an 850 engine? I don't see the problem
with going to independent coils and a fly-by-wire throttle if I use the same
exterior "top-end" components off the existing S70 engine...

What I am trying to do here is just work up some scenarios and answers before I
actively go shopping for an S70. And some ideas (besides what I already have)
of what years to look for or stay away from.. I was thinking of looking for a 99 or 2000 model, but the comments so far seem to say only a 98 will work..

    Thanks!

    850 - S70 Compatability and Suggestions 850 1996

Ashley--While I can't say anything useful about exterior body parts, be aware that Volvo made a lot of interior changes. I spent a lot of time looking at S-70 seats with the idea of buying two for a friend and installing them in his 96 850 turbo wagon because the leather was shot. It looked like Volvo may have changed the seat mounts. I just didn't have the time to jerk out an S-70 seat in the one wrecking yard I visited to see if it would fit in an 850. Didn't look like it. Also, if you do find an S-V-70, make sure it's a 98. The 850's and the 98 70 series used the same electronic module. But from 99 on they used a completely different ignition system--separate coils for each cylinder, wireless throttle control, etc.--and very little of your 850 will interchange, including interior parts. Not only is there a question of the 850 seats themselves fitting, the airbag system in the seats from 99 on won't interchange with the airbag system on the 98 and 850's and vice versa, even if you do manage to install your 850 seats in it. Different airbag software I am told. I and other BB members would really like to hear how your project goes if you do find a 98. Keep us posted. Dick

    Ashley,

Your turbo engine should work fine in an S70. The 850's and S70's are nearly the same car anyway. I'm sure there's an S70 out there that has had the timing belt break and has bent valves. Something like that would be perfect to put your engine into.

    Good luck.

    Dave
