Check Engine MIA 850 1996

Okay, I know this my sound a little silly or even stupid. However, no matter what I've tried I cannot find the bloody check engine indicator light. Well here's what I've tried: 1)Turn the key to run position quite a few lights come on, none of them are a check engine light. 2)On my instrument cluster I have used an extremely bright flash light to look at the indicators and found everything except a check engine light. 3) I disconnected an O2 sensor and started the car, no check engine light. 4) started the car with out the gas cap fastened, no eneckengine light. So my conclusion is: A) The indicator bulb is out. or B) The damn thing isn't there. I'm leaning toward the latter due to the fact that I cannot see where it is with my second course of action with the flash light. Please help me get this car through inspection; it passes for everything else but the damn light.

CEL is on the bottom row, right hand side, second from last, next to the Service light(the last light). From what I can tell, your light bulb has burned out.
When you change bulbs, replace the 4 main bulbs and move the service bulb to the CEL slot. You don't want to service anyway.
Probably the PO either pulled the CEL bulb or it burned out because the problem was never fixed.
Time to get your codes read/cleared at an Autozone.

Okay I just went out to the car and looked at the dash. Next to the Service light is a Lambda Sond light (orange indicatyor with a green triangle with the Lambda Sond symbol in it). I currently have NO codes from the ECU (or so says my OBD-II reader resetter).

The rest of the world uses Lambda instead of CEL, including Canada. Sounds like your car was from our friends up north.

What is the history of this car? How long have you owned it? Could a previous owner or an unethical shop have tampered with the instrument cluster or replaced it with one from a non-US standard car? People and shops have been known to do such things (for example, removing a blown airbag and restoring the cover, thus hiding an accident history).

You have a good point. I've only owned the car a few months now. It passed CARFAX report. Yet I noticed the tailgate has been repainted. The odometer matches the title and the CARFAX report. But never the less I'm beginning to think that you may be right about the cluster being swapped. Worth looking into. I'll have to pull the cluster next chance I get.
