OBD II Code P0410 850 1996

Checked my codes after the check engine light came on, reads "P0410". Anyone know of a likely culprit that's triggering this code?

My '98 XC just gave me the same code this weekend. I'm almost certain it's the secondary air pump that's mounted beneath the air filter housing. When I get time, I'm going to take it apart and clean it and hope for the best because a replacement or even a rebuild kit from IPD is not cheap ($500-$600 range). If you live in an area that requires emissions testing then you'll need to get that fixed before they approve you otherwise, run it, you'll be OK. At least for a while.

Yep, it's a secondary air injection system code. Check the blower to see if it is working. Unplug it from the relay and put 12v on the blue wire. If it runs, your problem is elsewhere. Can be the relay, the SAS valve or the small controller on the inside of the radiator shroud (has purple and white vacuum lines running to it). My blower went belly up and i managed to fine a new one on ebay for $150. but they're rare. FCPGroton gets about $300 for a new one vs $4-500 at your friendly dealer depending on how many customers he's screwed this week.

My 97 had the same code. The SAS valve and the air pump needed to be replaced. I bought a new SAS valve but was able to save on the air pump by buying a rebuilt VW air pump and converting it to the 850 style. Both the Volvo and VW air pump are made by Pierburg and the differences are relatively minor, considering that the VW pump can be had rebuilt for less than $50 and the Volvo pump usually costs about $150 for a used one --- and who knows how long a used Volvo air pump will last, given that most of them fail in service?

Thanks for all the feedback. Since there are no emissions requirements here in OH, this will be low priority for me to get fixed.
