C70 convertible, yeah or nea ?

Considering a C-70 ragtop. Wondering if the known issues are the same as S 70 of similar vintage. What would best year(s)would bge or should I steer clear. I have never seen many posts on these and wondering if there might be a reason ????

Thanks.

C70 convertible, yeah or nea ?

Sure, the basic 70-series weak spots still apply -- ABS module, ECM failure, typical Volvo overly-soft suspension, understeer. These are no worse in the convertible, but being a covertible (which is a much more complicated machine) it has its own unique issues.

Too much body flex, or cowl shake, as with any convertible, is the most common complaint that I'm aware of, but this can easily be ameliorated with inexpensive (<$180) strut braces and optional anti-sway bars (~$360?). I've found only the former to be necessary. I'll eventually install the IPD anti-sway bars, but have seen enough improvement with just the strut brace that I don't really need the sway bars.

(In my opinion, every Volvo I've owned has had way-too-soft suspension, with the exception of our '99 V70R AWD. I added anti-sway bars and strut braces in our 780T, 245, 850, and C70.)

Next, the frameless windows can be a bit noisy around the seams. I had the same issue in my '91 Integra, which was a hardtop with frameless windows. Looks nicer, though.

Complaints with the top are probably next most common, but neither I nor anyone I personally know who also owns a '99 C70 convertible have ever had ANY problems wiht the top. We all live in the very-temperate SF bay area, so I can't help but think that many issues with the top are weather- and environment-related.

My only remaining complaint is somewhat limited rearward visibility with the top up. Better than MANY convertibles, but not as good as my brother's '01 330ci, which has a larger, lower-set rear window. You have to get used to using the sideview mirrors more.

In my opinion, on the plus side: Potentially one of the most stunning stock sound systems ever, gorgeous looks, an absolute joy to drive, and pretty uncommon on the road (which I also like about my 780T). This is also why you don't hear much about them.

A convertible involves some sacrifices. It also comes with certain benefits in fun and looks that I don't think any hardtop can match. You have to decide what's important to you.

Closing thought: People who have something to complain about tend to speak up about 9x more than people who don't -- in cars, computers, life, you name it. I suspect there are a lot more happy C70 Convertible owners who we never hear from.

Just look down below as there's at least one thread with the very same question and several opinions. Mine is "nea"
