Ignition switch keying V70-XC70

I need to replace my mechanical portion of the ignition switch.
Is is possible for a local locksmith or myself to 'key' a generic replacment?
I want to maintain the key compatible with the door, hence buying a replacement part is $165 locally, and two weeks waiting period.
My switch 1st failed as 'stiff to start' and yesterday started to spin around - Will it continut to work, or am I facing imminent NO GO??
Pete

It will work on and off, sometimes it will not let you start the car and other times it will not let you take the key out.
I have not heard of anybody being able to rekey an ignition switch (mechanical part). You may break ground here if you can find if it is possible.
I remember paying about $125.00 for the one on my 98 V70 and replacing the elctrical portion at the same time since it was out already.

Replace key assembly ASAP!!!. Dealership is the only place you can order this assembly. You will need to show license and proof of registration key ID and may take up to 5 working days for delivery. Order assmebly now!!!, car can become inoperable at unwanted circumstance. Labor is simple but time consuming.
