Tubo Oil Leak Experience? V70-XC70 2000

My 2000 XC has 112,000 miles. It appears to have an oil leak from the turbo of about one half quart in 2000 miles. My mechanic advises that the turbo could blow a major oil leak at any time and that the turbo should be replaced with a rebuilt unit. I have a few questions:

1. Is common for a trubo to fail via oil leaks at this mileage?I have used Mobil One synthetic oil and change it every 4000 miles. I also let the car idle for about 2 minutes before turning it off.

2. Is there a high risk of major failure and oil leaks as my mechanic advises? Would it be inprudent to check the oil frequently and delay the trubo replacement.

3. Is it generally less expensive to replace the turbo with a rebuilt unit than attempt to replace gaskets, e.t.c.?

I would value advice from anytone.

Tubo Oil Leak Experience? V70-XC70 2000

is this an EXTERNAL oil leak (i.e can you sea it on the outside of the turbo, or is it leaking into the induction piping or exhaust?

without this information no one can really answer your questions...the other posters have assumed its an external leak....

if its internal check crank case ventilation...

btw 1 ltr in 2000 miles is well within volvo's oil usage profile for a new car (although i would take one back that did use that much!)

I think it's absolutely absurd that your mechanic would tell you that a turbo could fail due to a leak in it's drain pipe. Maybe if there was a huge leak out of the supply line but if it was that bad of a leak, then there would be a much greater loss of oil and it's likely that your car would smoke due to the oil burning on the outside of the turbo. All it creates is a mess under your hood. I go with what MadeInJapan says. I was a truck diesel mechanic for five years, now I'm in parts on the warranty side and I've never seen turbos fail due to a leak in the drain tube. Granted, trucks are different, but a turbo is a turbo: they all need lubrication. My '98 also leaks in this area. It's more likely that my or your or anyone elses turbo will fail due to contamination in the air side of the system than an oil leak. If your "air" side of the system is clean and seal, then you shouldn't have a problem. I hope you trust your mechanic 'cause it sounds like he's unfamiliar with Volvo turbo charged engines. To answer your questions:
    1. No, it is, however, common for it to leak at this mileage.
    2. No, Yes. Replace your turbo if it starts to make "funky" (technical term) noises or if it fails completely
    3. Way cheaper to replace gaskets.

You sure it's not the turbo's return line "O" ring that's leaking? If so, it's a cheap fix and doesn't require a new turbo. Here's some information on it and where to get the replacement parts:
