Code P172 850 1997

On my 1997 850T5 with 77K miles I am getting check engine light with code P0172. According to my OBDII Code Reader: System too Rich (Bank 1). But what does it mean and what I should be looking for.

Thank you all.

John

Have you tried tightening your gas cap (until it clicks several times)? A loose one will give the "too rich" code. If it is tight, there is still a possibility that the cap gasket is old and brittle. I'd check that before going the O2 sensor route.

I'd suspect a failing O2 sensor if they are origional. They eventually set a code of their own but not right away as they generally fail slowly. Couple other common things are vac leaks or a bad ECT sensor that makes the computer "think" the engine is cold all the time. Check out volvospeed.com/bay13 for tips on tracking down vac leaks etc.
