engine light is on 850 1994

The engine light is on and the code is coming up 241. What's wrong with my car and what how do I fix it? Thanks!

I have a 98 V70 and AutoZone sold me a new gas cap and reset my light for me for no additional costs(not every tech will reset the light, or even knows how). Total costs $11.

Wortha try. If anything, Autozone will read your code for free.

You don't need a code reader to reset the light on a '94 (actually it can't be done with one). Access the box labeled "A" next to the washer refill tank under your hood to do this. You'll want to read your codes first...and since you were able to get 2-4-1, obviously you know how to do this. Resetting is easy but it has to be done quickly. Put the lead in socket 6 of "A" box, and run through the test (you can't delete the codes until they've all be read) as you did before, then press the test button and hold it down for about 5 seconds and release. After 3 seconds, the LED will light (now quickly), press and hold the test button for another 5 seconds and release. The LED will go out. Switch off the ignition....you're done. The CEL should now be off.

FYI, you can remove the flame trap and don't bother to replace it. They stopped installing them on the 850's in 1996. Excellent instructions and digital pic's on how to do this on Bay 13 website.

2-4-1 means that the EGR system's flow is faulty. The EGR is the Exhaust Gas Recirculating system. It recirculates a small amount of the exhaust gas back into the intake reducing emmissions. I would recommend cleaning your flame trap and all the little vacuum hoses connected to the intake and trap. Often they can become clogged. Also, check your EGR Valve mounted on the back of your intake manifold to see if it's clogged. Hopefully one or all of these will cure your ills. If not, then it could even be your catalytic converter not reading the airflow correctly or one or both of your O2 sensors, but most likely it a clogged recirc. hose or hoses, including the flame trap.
