Transmission Slipping 850 1994

I noticed that when the car was started in the morning for the first time, the transmission would not shift out of first gear automatically. I live in San Francisco, so we are not talking about really cold weather. I did a transmission flush a 3-4 months ago, but it did not change. This weekend I checked the fluid (cold) and found it overfilled, but I did not have time to drain it. Last night I got about five blocks, the check engine light came on, and the upshift arrow started blinking. The transmission was slipping in all but the manually shifted first gear.

I'll check the error codes tonight, but does anyone have any leads and potential costs. A websearch on another forum hinted it might be a switch under the batter. The car has about 85,000 miles - I don't drive it much.

Thanks

Every car and situation is different but these comments might help.

If your reading of the codes indicates the PNP switch there is no real choice. On my car I had this done by an independent for about $250 about 3 years ago. After inspecting the job and looking at the instructions on Bay13 I decided if needed again I could do it myself. The gearbox at first acted up only on a few very cold days in winter. A year later it got to acting up on days that were not very cold. On inspecting the old switch the contact tracks were very badly worn.

If you don't know what code is set you should find out. I got all the same symptoms as you have a few days after replacing my evaporator because I had not reconnected one of the harness connectors under the dash securely. The codes set all indicated mode selector switch failure (open or short circuit). Securing the connector cured the problem.

I bet is just in limp mode, not slipping. When it gets cold my pnp acts up to, the 40's will do it at night.

Row... row... the shifter then see what it does.

      Row it 15-20 times

So if I row it 15-20 tiems and I get it working, can I do any damage by continuing to drive it? In other words, can I put off this $400 job? Both my regular mechanic and another local agreed that it was the PNP switch and that it is not a DIY project.

        Thanks!

You can put it off but eventually it will probably act up again and annoy the hell out of you to the point that you'll want the switch replaced. If you're successful, save your money for the repair while it's still temporarily working.

On my 1995 850 GLT, the PNP switch was replaced by a Volvo dealer at a cost of $370 when it only had 67,110 miles. It is well known that the PNP are commonly replaced on 850s. At 107,000 miles, I had severe slippage problems and the dealer recommended that I replace the transmission, which was estimated to cost about $3,700. 850s do not have mechanical transmission problems and after reading Brickboard, I took my 850 to an independent Volvo repair shop. The mechanic replaced the transmission solenoid and wiring harness and flushed the tranny for a total repair bill of $1,036. Today, the car has over 132,000 and runs nicely.

Where is the solenoid located at? I replace my PNP switch myself about 2 years ago. Now it stays in neutral for a few seconds and engages to gear from stop when it gets hot. Like delay before moving when step on gas.

If you do a Search under "transmission solenoid", you'll find some additional information. In one thread a user directed a person to: http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ic/ic40238.htm
