torque rod bushing

Hi all,

I've searched the archives but don't seem to find an answer.

The torque rod bushing is shot. The steering wheel seems to "bob" up and down over rought roads.

Is this a symptom of a failed bushing?

Thanks,
Bryan

Sounds like it. Call IPD and talk to them about your symptoms. They have new poly bushings that will set you right. If you don't know their number, go to their site to get it: www.ipdusa.com

      MIJ,

      Thanks for the info.

I replaced it with the OEM bushing. But, the problem is still there.

I called IPD and Matt suggested that it was possibly the struts.

Finally, I called an indy Vovlo mechanic who told me to have the tires balanced before I brought it in for further examination.

Could it really be that simple? I'll let you know.

      Bryan

Could be...Volvo suspensions are real finicky, but when you get them right, you know because the ride is so smooth and quiet.

          And the answer is...

          MIJ,

          failed RF motor mount.

Yes, the ride is smooth and quiet on perfect roads.

I know the suspension tuning on the S70 is less jarring than the 850. But, on the 3rd world roads of Michigan, smooth and quiet are not the words I would use to describe the ride.

No matter. After 80K miles and 8 years I'm still glad that I chose this car.

          Thanks again.

          Bryan

            And the answer is...

Glad you found your answer...may I ask, what possessed you to look there? There are so many parts related to the front end that it is sometimes really difficult to "tease" out all the posibilities.

              And the answer is...

              MIJ,

I'm relying on the advice of a Volvo specialist.

That indy mechanic put it up on a lift and he and his 2 assistants went at the suspension and engine bushings with pry bars.

They found excessive play in the RF motor mount although I don't know if it has completely separated from its fasteners or is only torn.

The ball joints and tie rod ends were recently replaced. The tires only have about 12K miles on them. The wheel balance was only slightly off on 2 wheels (LF & RR) and balancing them did not stop the motion.

The mechanic's opinion is that the "bobbing" steering wheel is from excessive drive train movement resulting from the failed motor mount.

I guess the proof will be if a new mount stops that problem.

              Thanks,
              Bryan
