New Purchase V70-XC70

I just recieved my 1999 XC after purchasing it on E-Bay.. Scary stuff. Anyway now that I have purchased it and everything looks good on the outside what are some common problems with this car? It has 82,000 miles . Should I call the bank now to take out a 2nd on my house?

Your ETM will, in all likelyhood, fail again eventually even if it was replaced. When it does, clean it, it's worth saving 400-600 bucks. ABS module is also likely to fail. I would urge you to not buy OEM as it will fail again. Send it off to Victor in CA, he'll fix it right. If you can look past those problems, it's a great car! I'm in TX and really don't need AWD but we vacation in NE CO NM in inclimate weather so it's worth it.

I am on my second XC; the first was a 98’. Had some small problems with it but in all was a good car. At 98,000, I traded in on a new 04’XC and love it. My advice is to have the transmission power flushed and find a way to get the service records especially recalls. These all wheel drive cars require a little more maintenance the conventional cars. What people need to understand about all wheel & four-wheel drive vehicles is there are more issues to deal with no matter which one you own. That’s why if you don’t need one don’t buy one.

Did you find out from the previous owner if the ETM in the car was replaced? This is likely to be one of your most expensive repairs. Check if the module has a white or yellow sticker. If it is yellow, the part was already replaced.

Did it have service records? First, I'd replace the oil, the ATF, the brake fluid, check all the engine mounts and do consider new shocks and struts along with spring seats, struts/shock mounts and swaybar end links if the suspension is rattly. Any lights on the dash? How does it ride and how is the turbo (if it has one). Hope it's a good car for you.
