Replacing outer CV joint boot 850 1995

I'm about to replace my front driver side outside CV boot. The Hayes manual indicates that pre-'95 cars have a staked 20mm bolt for the drive axle and post-'95 have a 22mm self locking bolt. Well, these must be typos because I have a 36mm staked bolt on mine. I have effectively destroyed a screwdriver and awl trying to "unstake" the bolt. Any suggestions on how to get this badboy off? See pic I included to clarigy any questions.

Thanks,

Phil

The 20/22 mm bolt size yo mention refers to the diameter of the fastener, not the wrench/socket size required to remove it. Get a good sharp cold chisel to unstake the nut, and a breaher bar with a cheater to loosen it.

    Well,

I got the axle off. The screwdriver did it. However, I really wish the manual would have said somethig about the qt+ of tranny fluid which comes out with the axle. Garage floor is now a nice shade of red! Got myself the brass drifts. I'm openning the circlip with a pliers and using the drift and a hammer to try to remove the CV joint from the axle. I'm beatingthe heck out of that thing and she ain't going anywhere! What am I forgetting? I'm 95% done with this job and now I'm stuck! Still have 2 days before the week-end is through. Good thing I'm within walking distance of the tools and auto parts shops!

    Phil

Did you tap out the center ring so it's on the shaft at least a little? This way the circlip will stay open. Now, you just have to keep working it...tapping all around between the eyes of the circlip with the drift. Tap only the inner ring so you don't damage the outer ring or ball housing.
Persistence, my friend. You'll get it.
      Good luck!

    Hi Phil,

I used to replace my bearing hub on one side and I use a 25" long reach breaker bar with a regular 36mm socket but before, just straighten up the bolt collar in the key way with a little punch, that's it. Use some penetrating oil like PB BLASTER if you're going to have problems to remove the axle shaft from the bearing hub

I have removed the caliper-rotor-etc from the drive axle. The Hayes manual indicates that a screwdriver should be used to remove the inner CV-joint from the transaxle (driver's side). Is this arrow pointing to the joint (see pic attached)? How sensitive is this area? I don't want to start "wacking" at this thing with a screwdriver and hammer and puncture some seal.

I was thinking of simply leaving the axle attached and try and remove the outer CV joint from the axle, while it is still attached to the transaxle. Is this possible?

      Thanks,
      Phil

PS. Good thing I have 3 more days to fix this thing!!
