Idle or Trans Problem 850 1993

Posted recently about potential trans problem. The car will not idle in gear. It appears to surge like the torque converter is not slipping. Suggestions were to clean the throttle body, check and clean the idle air valve.

Well with all that done, still have the problem. I actually removed the throttle body and cleaned. I also removed the idle air valve...assumed it was the cylinder part next to the throttle body. Still no help.

How does the air valve actually work? It appeared to close??

The A1 codes are 111. The only place I was able to find codes was the A7. Can someone post the codes for this section? Does anyone have other suggestions? There were essentially no codes other that A7 and some on the ABS section (A3??).

I have had a very similar problem with my 94 non-turbo 850 - surging idle then dies - also have had a delay when accelerating from a stop - stumbles with no power at all then suddenly kicks in and takes off like a rocket. I recently replaced the idle air control valve with one from the junkyard and the surging problem is gone but I still have the stumbling from a stop.

Mike.....where are you when I need you!!!

Can someone post the A7 codes? I have several that are shown. Are these really fault codes or just info type codes?? Can the idle air control valve be jumped....what I mean is can I confuse the valve to remain open/closed and find out if this is the problem??

Your tranny has a lockup feature in 2,3, and 4th gears. If you have E and S mode, push the S button. Start the car in neutral and then quickly go to L. If it still kills the engine and the tranny fluid is clean and at the proper level, check ALL wiring for proper contact.
    For what it's worth:
My 164 had a loose wire at the starter which was almost pulled off when ever I shifted to R and caused the engine to die. Fix? Clean the contact and squeeze it with pliars. Then fixed the motor mounts which allowed the engine to torque too much when engaging R.

When you cleaned the throttle body were you able to notice if the flame trap hose connection was plugged. There's a small vacuum line connected to the flame trap housing and the connector tube tends to get plugged with a hard carbon substance. If your's is plugged you'll have to drill it out to get it cleaned. There's a solenoid in the transmission valve body unit that controls the torque converter lock/unlock. Maybe this is bad??

On the throttle body itself there were two small vacuum lines attached. Both of those holes were cleaned. I used carb cleaner and flushed them throughly. I have repalced the flame trap a couple of years ago. I show now trans codes. There are codes for the lock-up....I would assume that these would indicate if that were the problem??
