How to replace a side marker bulb? S40-V40 2000

Need to replace the left rear (red) side marker light on my 2000 V40. I can pop the assembly out just fine, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to get at the bulb. Where the wires go in, there's a kind of rubber seal that I can't peel up. I tried to see if the red lens cover pops off, but it doesn't seem to. The owner's manual doesn't even list the replacement bulb. Anybody know how to do this?

If the side marker is the same as the S70 you should be able to grab the socket that holds the bulb, twist about .25 turn & pull it out of the lens assembly.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look anything like what you describe. There doesn't appear to be anything to twist. But thanks for the suggestion!

Took a good look at it in the daylight. The only conclusion I can reach is that the entire lamp assembly has to be replaced. There's nothing that can be removed to get at the bulb without causing permanent damage. What's worse, it looks like you have to remove the wheel well covering behind the tire to get to the plug for the lamp assembly. What kind of lame-brained design is that? It's bad enough that I'm replacing headlights every few weeks--at least I can do that myself. It's ridiculous to have to make a dealer service appointment and special order a part just to replace a side marker light. I want my 945 back!

Sorry, this has nothing to do with the side marker light.
I bought a 2000 V40 and was told by the dealer that there is an inherent design problem in the 40's electricals. Apparently the powersurge on startup is causing lamps to blow.

The work around is to turn on the parking lamp before you start the motor, then turn the headlamps back on.

Looking at the maintenance log from the dealer showed a consistent 2 week interval for some type of bulb change. That disappeared, I assume, when the original owner did this change.

At least at this point (1 month) I haven't blown a headlamp, just a backup light (old dogs and new tricks).
