850 Shutdown While Driving[850/1993] posted by Joe Vercellone on

I've got a 1993 850 with 130k miles that's causing me some anxious moments and I'm hoping I can get to the heart of the problem before I end up having a serious accident with it. Over the last 3 months it has completely shut down on me on 4 separate occasions either as I was about to merge into traffic at low speeds or was braking to make a turn. When it shuts down my instrument/warning lights totally illuminate. Once I bring the car to a halt it starts right up again. I've had it into a Volvo Dealer service shop as well as to another reputable Volvo repair shop. On both occasions they couldn't find a problem and told me that I probably had a loose wire that was shorting out the 850's electrical system. I know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack but I'm getting desperate to find a clue as to what's causing the problem. The only other indicator I'm getting that might be related to a bigger electrical problem is that my A/C OFF light and my RECIRCULATE ON light periodically blink on/off for about 10 seconds when I start the car. Has anybody had similiar problems with an 850 or any other Volvo model? This is my 1st Volvo so I have no experience factor. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. --

Software reload only applies to 96 and some 97 non-turbo model 850's which use Motronic 4.4. This wouldn't be applicable to a 93-95 as they have LH3.2/EZ129K or Motronic4.3 in U.S. market models.
