544 gas tank configuration[ALL/1998] posted by Harley Johansen on

does anyone know the inside configuration of the 544 gas tank? I have a reconditioned tank that gives me some problems. I connected gas line to pump to the side fitting, and vent line to the line coming from the top of tank. I'm running with a 6 volt electric pump installed to body of car near the tank. The pump gets fuel starved when accelerating up long hills, and I can't get it to take more than about 4 gallons from tank, then it acts like tank is empty. I'm wondering what the tank inlet tube looks like on the inside, and if this is getting plugged, or constrained somehow. Thanks, Harley Johansen Moscow, ID

I looked at my spare tank['63]:

There's a 5/16 tube from the outlet about 4" straight into the tank where it bends down at ~45 degrees to about 1/2" from the bottom of the tank.

In your case, the tube might be restricted, missing, bent or cracked; you can see it if you remove the sender for the fuel gage. You can also see how much crud is in the tank.

Good Luck!
