brakes on 95 850[ALL/1998] posted by Nick Gidakos on

Hi everybody,

I have a 95 850GLT and I get a vibration when I hit the brake pedal. I took the car to the dealer and they had the brakes replaced and new rotors put in. The damage was 400 plus dollars and the vibration is still there. If I was to replace the rotors in the back brakes can I do it on my own. I took a look at the rar brakes and the only way to take out the rear rotors is through the center of the rotor, there is a rather big blt there. Any special tools or what do I need to accomplish that. I though if i undertake that I might as well change the pads. Any info will be appreciated.

Nick

I would not undertake the brake job without a manual. So far as I can tell, there are no manuals for 850's except from Volvo at (800) 25 -VOLVO. Be advised there are many , many manuals from VOLVO for your car. The one for brakes is : #5001201 $29.95 + 5.00 shipping I believe I got my order in Michigan from Wisconsin in about 4 business days. Watch your jack points. Mark

There is also the Haynes manual for the 850. The procedure is explained in it.

The brake discs have a tendency to get warped on the 850 as well as on the 960. If it is the front ones you'll feel it in the steering wheel, if it is the rear ones you'll feel it through the floor when you hit the breakes, as vibrations. This is a known problem for Volvo. On my present 960, I've already changed discs twice all around after 120.000 km (75.000 miles). Take care after a hard retardation when the brakes get very hot, try not to stop until they have cooled down. If you stop with "glowing" discs, they most certainly get warped.

Hi everybody,

I just got mine and you can call the UK and they will ship to you by air mail. I am not sure if you save money or what. I did not know that IPD had it. I can get you the manual number and the phone# for Haynes UK.
