850 Turbo Oil Consumption[ALL/1998] posted by Garth Gullekson on

I am new to Volvos, and would appreciate feedback on what is considered normal oil consumption for them.

I have a '96 850 Turbo Wagon with 12,000 km on it (approximately 7,500 miles). I am currently using conventional oil (just about to switch to synthetic) and have driven the car relatively hard since the 2000 km break-in period. I have found that since new the oil consumption has been around .4 liters every 4000 km (my oil change interval). For those that are metrically challenged, that is a little over 4/10 of a US quart in 2500 miles.

I'm not alarmed, but am used to Japanese vehicles that didn't use any oil over similar intervals.

What sort of oil consumption should I expect?

Thanks,

Garth Gullekson

I have a 95 850 turbo with 27k. To date I experience very little oil consumption. I would talk to the service dept. about this degree of loss. Perhaps it's something as simple as a loose bolt.

good luck
