Natural Gas Powered

Volvo 850/870 -- Natural Gas Powered

NOTE

This is a natural gas / gasoline powered bi-fuel Volvo. Volvo has been offering these models in many countries for a few years now.

The S/V70 and S80 are planned to be available this year in a natural gas version at dealerships in the US.

With a natural gas car, you are able to still use gasoline if needed. Natural gas costs about .65 per gallon (same MPG) at the pump, .35 if you fuel at home. Each car coverted or purchased also gets a $2,000 IRS deduction! Plus, natural gas is non-toxic and safer than gasoline.

Please inquire about natural gas models at your local Volvo dealership or phone the DOE for information on free conversions 800-423-1DOE.

NOTE

This is my natural gas 240. It runs on both gasoline or natural gas. Natural gas is great because for many reasons: it is cheaper than gasoline (.65/gallon, same MPG), reduces wear on engine, gives of 60%+ less pollution, is non-toxic, and is a domestic fuel.

Natural gas can be found at over 1,400 stations in the US or you can fuel at home! Please e-mail me or call the DOE at 1-800-423-1DOE if you would like to learn more. The cost for converting a car is usually paid by your local government incentives!

This was my first Volvo, purchased new in September of 1973 at Illini Volvo in Champaign Illinois. The 1800 and I have been thru a lot together over the years and I finally treated her to a makover 3 years ago, when I had the rust repaired and had the original orange paint redone as a superfine metalflake. This car never fails to turn heads or get comments when I take her out.

Forgive me - this is not my car but Rickard Rydell and Jim Richard's TOCA Great Race winning S40. It happened on Sunday, October 4, 1998. After 1000km, they won by 2 seconds from a Nissan Primera. The S40 is news in the USA so I thought there may be some interest. Enjoy! (For the tech-heads, it was snapped off the telecast using a Snappy video capture device.)

NOTE

This is my first Volvo. She is a 760 Turbo, originally owned by my parents. She has always had the tinted windows, I recently installed IPD braided brake lines, K&N Filter, and soon hope to install '91 style taillights (everything else is stock). This is the most reliable car I've ever driven, hardly in the shop, except for some recent A/C work.
She loves to cruise, she is very nimble and quick as a daily driver. I like her looks as a conservative automobile, not too showy, just business.

I'm looking for an equally equipped wagon
(with the 5-speed)prefferably around the same year.

I ordered my Classic Green 854T with the "Sport Suspension", which turned out to be neither. It was cruel and punishing and it gave me headaches. If you look REAL closely, you can see Bilstein yellow over the front tire. I also pulled the cruel springs and replaced them with standard Turbo springs. Along with some mild engine torque enhancements, this car is significantly more fun and rewarding to drive than when new.

"This is Turbo Country -- around here an engine either makes its own air or it goes without!"

"Who needs body-colored moldings?"

After my first ride in a 544 in 1971, I just had to have one, which I bought that year. In 1978 the springs came through the trunk and I was without one ontil 1989. I found this one in Seattle and have been in love ever since. It is in mint condition and I use it every day. Wonder whaen they'll come up with a new one like VW.

One of the long-standing traditions at Vinni's pizza is that Volvos are the main mode of pie schlepping. Represented in this picture is approximately 200 years and 1,000,000 miles of Volvo. These are not your Sunday drivers, but as the slogan goes, they are, strong as dirt. Since this was taken, the 142 (2nd from right) has gone into retirement, but we have added a '67 122 wagon and '64 122 sedan. In addition to enjoying these wonderful vehicles, the crew is very knowledgeable and helpful when the fleet needs repairs.

Bought this old beast from the 2nd or 3rd owner for $200.00. Threw in an 80 amp alternator and an instrument cluster from a Turbo into it. It worked. Drove it for 3 months before it died and needed a new wire harness at 232,350. Threw a new harness on and had some other engine work done to it and it's been running ever since. I've upgraded it since the photo was taken. Added power mirrors, chrome grille, Turbo trim, and GL alloys to the body, while also upgrading the interior with tan leather seats, power windows, dual seat heaters, and power door locks. Looks a lot nicer today. But, even so, the car looks better in this photo than it did when I bought it.

My wife was driving a 1974 Caprice wagon (UGH!) and after driving my 82 she had to have one. So from the same yard [as my other car] I found this car donated to the Kidney Foundation!!
Paid 1300.00 in 1994 and found the complete service history and an extra key in the glove box! Drove this baby home from the yard and it's been a great family car for us. It's getting a new wiring harness and all new vacuum hoses while I have the intake off.

I purchased my first Volvo in 1992. It's this green DL and has been a great daily driver. I saved it from the salvage yard. People can't believe I bought this from a junkyard for $1100.00. It's getting a new rack and control arm bushing, rotors and pads very soon.

I bought this slate blue beauty from a dealership owned by a good friend for 1/3 it's going blue book price. Was previously garage kept by it's one non-smoking owner. Fell in love with this car the moment my fiancè and I set eyes upon it. It's beautiful inside and out. Only modification thus far is the audio system, 360 watt, 5 speaker system. Future modifications include cam, bilstiens, exhaust, bigger sway bars. I intend to keep this baby looking factory fresh. I'm hooked for life on Volvo...

A Nova Scotia Survivor,(the salt's in the air as well as the roads here). Velga came my way five years ago with only 63,000 kms (40,000miles) with only one previous owner. Not spared she's a daily runner year'round, and as dependable as a Volvo should be.I say aprox under milage as the odometer was broken for five years! But what the hey milage and years are incidental on these cars. Engine is B-21A and everything is original except for the GL alloy wheels. I couldn't resist.Would like to find a set of round fog lamps in good shape. E-mail me if you'vegot a set.

Seriously though, the support and suggestions from everyone here at the Brickboard have saved us countless headaches. Your suggestions, together with the skills of the Volvo Master Technicians at Burdumy Volvo in Huntingdon Valley, PA have helped to make our first car as beautiful, safe, and reliable as the day it rolled off the assembly line. Here's to the next 100K! Keep those bricks rolling!
