[PERFORMANCE] performance exhaust for an 04 V70R -posted by- RedAlrt

Head over to Swedespeed.com and look around in the Classified forum. Or ask your question in the FWD/AWD Wanted forum. You may have better luck there.

[AWD] [V70] [2005] 2005 V70 R advice -posted by- RedAlrt

Definitely check out the Swedespeed R-forum, but here are some R-specific issues to consider, research and accept before money changes hands...

Side hop, underdesigned clutch, heat soak, angle gear, tire rub, wheel bearings, clueless dealers, 4C issues, brake dust, truck-like turning radius, axle ping, exhaust pop, rain squeal, potential for the exhaust bracket to cause $2K in damage, need for extended warranty. Just do a search there on any of those issues.

BTW, I love my 04 VR 6-speed with 36K miles on in it. Whenever I mash the go fast pedal, I always get this stupid grin on my face. Issues...? What issues?

With 80K on an '05 you should be able to get that car cheap.

[AWD] [850] Sensa-Trac Strut Opinions? -posted by- RedAlrt

I just did the job myself on my V70 GLT. Bilstein Touring Class are the ones you want. Do a search on Bilstein TCs. You get post after post after post. That's a pretty good indication of what works well for many Volvo owners..the ones on this board, anyhow.

[AWD] [850] Oil trap replacment steps: Can anyone do a write up? -posted by- RedAlrt

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/knock_sensor.pdf

This has all of the steps for removing the intake manifold. Its on a V70 but it should be the same on an 850 The steps for oil trap seem to be straightforward after that.

[OPINIONS] Should I pull the trigger on an R? -posted by- RedAlrt

Bricksters, I have a dilemma...

I've saved up a few Benjamins and have an opportunity to purchase a 05-06 V70 R (which MUST be a 6-speed manual) this summer, if I can find one. I absolutely love the car and to tell you the truth, I'm not interested in any other vehicle and besides that, they're becoming more and more hard to find.

The dilemma is this, I have a 98 V70 GLT which runs very well and looks good enough to still turn heads. I don't really need 2 Volvos but it's running so strong, I can't justify getting rid of it. I've practiced preventive maintenance for as long as I've had it (timing belt, serpentine belt, transmission and brake flushes, synthetic oil and ATF, etc.). At 156,000 miles It's almost more valuable for me to keep it because I'd feel like I was giving it away if I sold it at market value.

So, should I pull the trigger on an R and experience some 300 hp, AWD, manual transmission, 4C, R love or should I just continue to enjoy no car payments and just drive the wheels off the GLT? I had planned on running it up to 200K anyhow.

Obviously, I'm gonna do what I wanna do anyhow, but I'd appreciate different perspectives from fellow brick drivers.

Thanx in advance,
RedAlrt

[AWD] [850] [1994] Orange coolant...is it worth the price? -posted by- RedAlrt

Use genuine Volvo coolant and distilled water. Call Tasca Volvo in Seekonk, MA
for a great mail order price. Small price to pay for confidence in your cooling system during the heat of summer or winter cold. Its all I've ever used in my 98 V70 GLT and its what I will use as long as I own it.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Radiator return line outlet snapped off. Part II -posted by- RedAlrt

I changed the (partly plastic!)radiator. The job was relatively easy but I do not like how the intercooler is attached to the radiator. There are li'l metal tabs on it that can easily break off. The Nissens radiator is just fine, refilled with good ol' Volvo coolant and distilled water.

[AWD] 225/45/17 tires -posted by- RedAlrt

A diagram on the IPD July-Aug 2001 newsletter shows a 225-45-17 tire on an 8" rim. IPD says 225-45-17s should fit the 1998-2000 70 series.

It seems you are certain that a 225 width tire will fit on a 7" rim. I'm under the impression that you need at least a 7.5" rim.

I have 215-45-17 tires on 7" rims and they work fine. I've thought about 225s but I don't think my rims are wide enough.

I removed the intake manifold to change out my knock sensors. Its fairly difficult but with these instructions and a Haynes manual, it can be done. Volvospeed was kind enough to add the procedure to the Bay 13 section

[AWD] [V70] [1988] O-Rings on the transmission fluid cooler lines to the radiator? -posted by- RedAlrt

I'm in the middle of a radiator change. I have the old one out and am expecting the new one in a couple of days. I ordered some more Volvo coolant and was told by a Volvo dealership that I need 4 O-rings; 2 for the oil supply and return lines and 2 for the transmission fluid supply and return lines. I'm also supposed to need 4 white "spacers," one for each line.

I see the two O-rings for the oil lines and I'll replace them.

I don't know of any O-rings on the transmission lines. Even when I've flushed the transmission fluid, I've never seen an O-ring on that line. Am I correct in thinking there are no O-Rings on the transmission lines or am I not looking hard enough? I looked on the inside of the old radiator and didn't see any either.

And what are these white spacers, I don't see those on any line. Nothing about any of this in the Haynes manual or Bay 13.

I want to get this right. My plan WAS to just reinstall the lines in the new radiator with new retaining clips. It would be nice to see an exploded view.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Radiator return line outlet snapped off. -posted by- RedAlrt

At 155,000 on my V70 GLT, I had the dreaded radiator return outlet at the top of the radiator snap off. I found a replacement radiator at a decent price at eeuroparts.com Three questions:

Can the outlet be repaired?

If not, is radiator R&R a difficult DIY job or should I take the car to my indy?

Are there step-by-step instructions available on how to do it(hopefully with pictures)?

Is there a radiator available that does not have the plastic end pieces?

Thank you in advance.

[AWD] [XC] [2003] Possible 2003 XC Purchase -posted by- RedAlrt

I have a friend considering purchasing a 2003 XC. It has 125,949 miles on it. The dealer wants $12,995. According to Carfax, this vehicle is a lease return and has more miles on it than a typical XC of its age. Looks like the price is below KBB. She's attracted to it because of the car's safety features.

1. Is this a good asking price?

2. What maintenance questions should be asked about the car (serpentine
    belt,timing belt, etc?)

3. Would you recommend this car to this person with no experience with Volvo?
Neither husband or wife know anything about working on cars (being a '98
V70 GLT owner myself, I personally say No to this one).

Thanks in advance

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Looks like the Alternator is on the way out -posted by- RedAlrt

Well, at $270 to have the alternator removed, rebuilt and reinstalled seems like a deal if a rebuilt Bosch unit is $210 plus core. I trust these folks and they've been in business a long time.

For informational purposes only (not pimping their business)here is their website.

[AWD] [V70] [1998] Looks like the Alternator is on the way out -posted by- RedAlrt

Well, after 7 years and over 150K miles, looks like my alternator is crapping out. I had to jump start the car Sunday night. After that the car ran fine and started up fine for a few days, and the weather was warm. Now that the weather is cold, the engine turns over a bit more slowly, which got me concerned. I had both the battery and the alternator checked at an alternator shop. The alternator failed the charging test at a little over 12V output.

The shop quoted me $270 parts and labor to replace it with a rebuilt alternator, which they themselves rebuilt. I think the price is reasonable.
I'm probably going to get the work done tomorrow. I could probably do it myself, but its close to the holidays and I don't REALLY feel like doing it and I know the power steering pump has to come off. But my question is this...

How many of you V70 GLT pilots have removed and replaced your own alternators and at what total cost?

How long did it take?
