<title>[RWD] [200] [1985] Car won&#x27;t start -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Remove the oil filler cap on the valve cover, look down the hole at the camshaft and have someone else crank the starter. As the engine turns over, does the camshaft rotate? If not, the timing belt broke and needs replaced. If that is the case, you are lucky that the 85 is a non-interference engine so only a belt would be needed!

jorrell
ps. don&#x27;t forget to check the TB tensioner bearing for wear, noise, and slop if the belt is broken.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1989] Bend my upper door corner back -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>My first recommendation would be a used replacement door from the salvage yard. If you don&#x27;t want to take that route, blocking the door away from body with the window rolled down, you might be able to forcibly push the upper corner of the window surround inward so it lines up. Keep in mind, the latter is something I have never tried myself.

<description>If that &#x22;awful&#x22; noise sounds like grinding, the problem might be that the flywheel or flex plate gear ring is chewed up, especially if the starter gear teeth look chewed when you removed the starter(s).

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] 240 Engine KnocK? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Rhys,

Just curious, did you do a post mortem on that engine and determine if the noise was caused by a softened skirt and/or a distorted face? I know the B230 has some pretty whimpy piston skirts and the 90&#x27;s/91&#x27;s had some of the softest steel cylinders both of which can result in piston slap/ ring groove piston wear but I have never heard of a piston deforming from an overheat due to lack of coolant in a B230F.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] 240 Engine KnocK? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>The reason I asked you to check the current condition of the oil was it would take a few hundred miles with water in the oil to cause bearing wear. Since the oil looks okay and you are not losing coolant now, the engine may be okay :) I would recommend using a mechanics stethoscope or a hollow open ended metal pipe to listen to different areas of the engine and accessories. Place one end of the pipe where you want to listen in contact with that part, and the other to your ear.

Note that an exhaust leak where the exhaust manifold bolts to the head is semi-common, especially on the #4 (rear most cylinder).

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] 240 Engine KnocK? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Questions:

1: How high did the temp gauge go?
2: Did the oil look like a foamy tan mess when it was drained?
3: Is the engine leaking or &#x22;losing&#x22; coolant?

In general, two to three minutes or miles is enough to warp a cylinder head and cause the headgasket to fail.Check the oil now, if it is a foamy mess, at least the head gasket is gone and quite possibly the rod or main bearings have been cooked due to lack of lubrication (coolant contamination).

<description>Please note that the &#x22;power sander&#x22; your father bought in the 60&#x27;s that was built in Maryland was most likely built by my Uncle Clifton Boyd. In his memory, I am certain he would be proud of his work! The quality of that &#x22;power sander&#x22; could not be duplicated for under $500 today! I still have a 1960s single speed B&#x26;D drill that I use on a regular basis, it is simply bullet proof and answers any demand I ask of it! The drill was handed down to me by my Father.

<title>[OPINIONS] Made in China or Bangladesh -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Here is a funny/sick one for you. In the electronics industry, China is KING for wireless modules, all of which list an FCC (Federal Communication Commission) label with a certification number. Oh heck it has a certification number, it must be good and will save a US company $15K in emissions testing. But wait, when one digs into the FCC database, the certification doesn&#x27;t exist!

Problems like this are brought to the attention of the FCC every day but yet nothing is done! This kind of crud makes me wonder how much money the FCC is receiving in &#x22;slush funds&#x22; from China!

If one brings such a violation of law to the attention of the FCC, the only answer is silence!

<title>[RWD] [200] [1992] Harmonic balancer problem, odd noise? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Problem found, it was the harmonic balancer slipping, Pageda&#x27;s advice of the painting a line paid off (thank you BTW!) After a 10 minute drive, the lines were off by more than two inches. I also managed to pull back the TB cover after removing the torx screw and the upper bolts, all looks good, so I won&#x27;t convict Dayco of bad tensioners and timing belts!

Thanks for the input folks, it is greatly appreciated!

jorrell
ps. That sound was so spooky that if I&#x27;d have heard it on Halloween I would have abandoned the car!

<title>[RWD] [200] [1992] Harmonic balancer problem, odd noise? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Dan,

Thank you for the idea, I will scribe a mark across both parts to see if they are slipping. I&#x27;m sure I would have thought about that eventually but starting another job tomorrow has me in a &#x22;pre-occupied&#x22; state! And as to Art&#x27;s comments which I highly respect, I&#x27;ll do my best to find cheap tools from a local &#x22;man shop, ie. Northern Tool&#x22; in order to get the TB cover off for inspection.

I just came back in after checking the transmission fluid thinking it might be related to the AW-70, fluid looked fine, nice level brown and &#x22;foamy&#x22;... JUST KIDDING, it was a nice red color!

FYI: In Herndon Virginia for the next few weeks!

<title>[RWD] [200] [1992] Harmonic balancer problem, odd noise? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Sorry folks, I hate to post such cryptic questions but I believe the harmonic balancer or the new timing belt tensioner is coming apart. At certain vehicle speeds like 45 and 65 MPH I hear a low frequency rubber like squeal/growl from the front of the car, accessory belts are properly tightened and so on. While sitting still if I put bleen in neutral and rev it to the appropriate RPMs,I hear no squeal. The squeal/growl is in my mind sub-200Hz and rather loud when it happens.

Visual inspection shows that the harmonic balancer pulley portion is lined up with the core but since I&#x27;m 300 miles away from home on a contract job, I don&#x27;t have the tools to validate the timing mark OR remove the timing belt cover to inspect the situation. The timing belt and tensioner are Dayco parts (sorry folks was in a hurry) they are less than a week old, and the harmonic balancer is a three year old Scamtech part with 50K miles.

Besides a slight power loss due to running 10% ethanol fuel, I have not identified any other anomalies. Any thoughts on this spooky sounding growl would be greatly appreciated, car has 286K, engine has 51K miles on it.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] Rear wheel hub replacement -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Okay, if you want to replace the axle, replace the axle but I doubt it is needed. The wheel studs can be driven or pressed out and replaced. If one hole in the hub of the axle is egged out, a few spot welds will keep the stud in place.

Trust me, you don&#x27;t want to tear into the rear differential unless there is no other choice.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1993] Hole punched in underside of my 240 wagon by a shop lift - weld or glue? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Welding would most likely melt the harness. One Solution would be to remove the passenger seat, peel back the carpet, remove the ABS module from under the driver seat followed by peeling back the wire harness so the don&#x27;t get melted.

The easier and safer option would be to grind the undercoating off the bottom of the floor and then use fiberglass cloth and resin to seal up the hole from the bottom. Follow up with a serious coat of undercoating or POR to seal the area shut.

<title>[RWD] [200] windshield replacement?? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>Benski,

I partially agree with you on the rust issue, ie. clean it up and prime it but there is one step missing. Primer is a sponge to both water and paint so it is necessary to &#x22;seal&#x22; the primer with paint. In short, primer only will promote rust!

I learned this the really hard way decades ago... I finished stripping to bare metal, straightening, body filler, and primer followed by letting it sit for two years in the garage before painting. When it came time for paint, the entire car was coated in surface rust, you guessed it... strip it again and start over!

<title>[OPINIONS] DCON -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>FC:

Interesting furnace failure! Those little vermin&#x27;s will chew on anything soft to make a nest. The D-CON approach is the correct approach, set a few boxes in the crawl space, they will eat it and it will &#x22;inflate&#x22; their stomachs (they can not vomit) so they starve to death in a dehydrated state which actually minimizes the stink their carcasses give off.

The important thing to note is that if a cat or dog eats D-CON, they can puke so they recover almost instantly. The other option is the use of an air rifle and an infrared scope, lots of fun but the D-CON is &#x22;automatic&#x22;!

<description>The only objection to your post is cylinder ring grooves, they are caused by wear and lack of engine heat. Any rust that builds up on the cylinders during storage will just be scraped off by the rings and get caught in the oil filter.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1991] What do you think of this beater 240? -posted by- Jorrell</title>
<description>This car has been front and rear ended mildly, but it is none the less bent especially in the rear as the bumper trim is missing and the gas cap cover doesn&#x27;t fit correctly. That is also most likely the cause of the trunk lid not latching issue. If you intend on buying this car as a daily driver inspect the rear trunk floor from underneath for rust and wrinkles.

In my opinion, this is a nice parts car... but then again, I am VERY picky!
