[OPINIONS] Doncha Love Winter!!! -posted by- jsaw

...Gee Jarrod, to be honest, that's just a typical winter day up here in Saskatchewan. I was hoping the tough part of winter was over when BAM!, we got another 2 feet or so of the white stuff. sigh.

As it is 2:30 in the morning, I am exaggerating just a tad. Those days aren't as common as I make out to be, but definetly nothing out of the ordinary. A good snowbrush and extra time to get to work are essentials to surviving a Sask. winter. The broom is a handy tool for days like those.

I'm happy that Bob beat me to the punch on the car diagnosis...Free car advice via internet video! The way of the future is here.

Best of luck on getting through the season. And thanks for the improvements on the board, I'm just fishing my way through them over the past day.

Cheers, Josh in Saskatchewan

[OPINIONS] Amazing Water Car and Welder!!!!!! -posted by- jsaw

Sorry, this is a post-and-run, but I gotta get out the door. Wanted to share this on the board.

I remember reading about some guy who had a water engine back in the 30's or 40's....didn't Ford buy his patent and bury it? Or am I just taken by the dirty rumour mill.....?

Anyways, I personally can't wait to build a 400 HP 4 banger turbo Volvo that runs off my garden hose!

Enjoy! http://ebaumsworld.com/2006/06/waterfuel.html

Merry Christmas!

[RWD] [700] [1989] compressed air through breather box..? not a good idea?? Its a 230FT.... -posted by- jsaw

Ouch...those blue clouds I'm leaving behind me when the engine is in vacuum are really getting to me...

In my bout of insomnia last week, I accidentally overfilled the oil by around a half liter. ( whoa, I was tired). My oil separator box was probably on the verge of needing replacement or flushing before an oil change, so now it's really punched.

I pulled off the PCV hoses and there was some nice sludge in there. I just changed the oil a month ago (synthetic 5w30 for the cold) so I'm hesitant to pour a bottle of engine flush throught the breather box and then spend another $40.00 on new oil.

I was just wondering if anyone's tried blowing low psi air through the box in hopes of clearing it up enough to last another month or two.....I tried blowing through it with a hose and it's pretty plugged ( a nice mouth full of oily air came back at me when I stopped blowing, yuck).

I lost my nice warm garage to work in so it's a -10 .C outdoor work environment for me. That's why I'm trying to do a quick-fix on the street , without changing the oil again.REmoving the inny manifold and breather box to clean it would be a finger-freezing job. I've been there and REALLY don't want to do that. Dammit, where are the "rent-a-garage" businesses when you need them....?!?

When I think about it, it could probably put a little too much pressure on the engine seals, Oil pan gasket and the like. Maybe this is a bad idea....

Any input??

Thanks!!

if you think THIS forum is a cesspool......it's time to unplug the ethernet connection and pull the blinds, cause it gets WAYYYY worse once you keep surfing. "Opinions" has definetly had it's moments, but on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the local sewage treatment plant, it's barely a "1".

Of course, it all depends on your level of brainwashing and political point of view.....if you're in a certain state of mind, the local convenience store can appear to be hell on earth.( all those damn immigrants and porno mags....)

[RWD] [700] [1988] looking to buy this car...need a quick answer on the IRS style... -posted by- jsaw

Here's an Autotrader listing link :

http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=24204275

I've got more they sent, one that has a bit of a view of the rear wheel and trailing arm (i think)....I could send this to you if you requested it.It might help with IRS identification.

The car is listed as an 88 - a carfax report claims this as well.

Now what I see is a dash / controls out of a later model 700 or early 900.(1991-92??)

Same goes for the headlights.

I'm mostly curious as to when they started putting in the ugly IRS suspension system. Was it 1989? I hope not...

The engine is a 230ft...dizzy mounted at the back of the head, with lh injection.

The car was made in Sweden as well..

Any help out there? I like this beast and have a ride set up to the west coast to purchase if I decide to......Volvo number 5 and counting!!!!

I'm stepping out for an hour, but will be checking then.

Thanks!!!

There is a blue 88 740 T for sale out in Vancouver area....deal looks pretty good.

I'm wondering if this is J.C.M.'s old blue car that he bought overboosted and had fun with....something is nagging the back of my brain that it could be the car.

If it is...I don't want it. I live 2500 kms away, so I'm trying to deduce if the turbo has been worked over or if this car is still in good shape.

I noticed that he has dissapeared off this board. Does anyone still have contact info?

[RWD] [200] strange no start as soon as key is released... -posted by- jsaw

I'd agree with that, too....is it a matter of replacing the entire ignition assembly or can the wiring be opened up. I know that the 700 series ignition units are real nasty to try and open up.

Could it be the wiring that leads out of the sealed part of the unit?
(keep in mind that I've never laid eyes on the assembly underneath the steering column trim..)
Cheers

[RWD] [200] strange no start as soon as key is released... -posted by- jsaw

Hi..I'm trying to help out a friend with his early 80's, single SU carbed manual tranny 4 clinder no turbo. Sorry but I don't have the actual year or engine model.

Gas is not an issue....it smells like fuel, even backfired once and black smoke comes out the tail.

Spark appears to be present, I adjusted the worn points and checkd for spark with a spare plug.

The car catches and revs up when the gas is pushed, the engine sounds strong and fine, but as soon as you release the key back from position "3", it faded down in RPM and quits. It's strange, the starter isn't the only thing behind the engine running, it will rev up momentarily when the pedal is pushed down.....but as soon as the key is released to go to position "2"....it fades and dies.

I'm quite mechaqnically inclined, so don't hold back with the explanations....:>

Is there a secret cutout switch in the ignition assembly? Could the alternator be holding out on its electrical supply?

I'm a 700 series feind, these carbed creatures often stump me.....

Thanks for the replies!!!!!!

[OPINIONS] Attn: photographers - my camera lens is smudged -posted by- jsaw

Hmmm...I agree with the idea that the initial coating on the lens may be smudged/scratched or whatever. After a lenspen, you could try an optometrist shop to see if they have any special tricks to help you out. Maybe removing the outer coating completely could be the only solution.

As a working photo professional for 15 years, I'm sorry to say I can't help you much more than that. :<

Wide lenses can work fine with scratches on the front element, dings on the rear element are a fatal flaw. The opposite goes for telephoto lenses.

Your point and shoot is probably a zoom, i'm guessing, so that leaves you hanging. If the smudge is leaving ghosts'on your pictures, you might be S.O.L...the best cure is prevention.

It might be time to either get a new camera or start incorporating the ghost blob into an art project with your pix.

Good Luck!

[RWD] [140-160] [1969] Solved -posted by- jsaw

After buying a new cap, rotor, wires, plugs and coil.......it was the point gap!!!

I admit I haven't worked on a car with points for ohhh...10 or 15 years, but still, silly me.

I installed the cap and rotor (they were both totally shot....no metal on the top of the rotor, no carbon rod at all on the cap), tested the condensor (bright blue spark on the inner dizzy spade connection with the key in the "on" position, and rechecked the point gap. It was below .35 mmm so I opened it up to .40 without moving the dizzy and boom! the car fired right up.

I didn't install the coil, so it's returnable. New points are on order and the wire set will be replaed with a proper one. It's a neihoff set for an 82 240, but it works, what the hell. The kids that work at Part Source here in town kept telling me it was the wrong one so after convincing them to sell the damn set to me...it's running. The wires are too long, but like I said they'll be replaced.

Now, back to good old plug and play LH 2.2......!!

Thanks for the help,

[RWD] [140-160] [1969] hot coil on 1969 142 -posted by- jsaw

My 1969 142s that I just sold to a friend less than 24 hours ago, died on him on the way home today. Yes, my face is red.

There was no spark and plenty of feul, so I checked the dizzy cap and found the carbon stem worn right down. More embarresment.

The rotor didn't have a metal tab in the center of it's top. Is that normal or did it expire and break off? The only metal was along the length of it to the tip, but again , not in the center of the top. I'm not as familiar with 140 ignition parts(obviously!), i'm a 740T suck.

On top of that, the coil was pretty hot. At one point, there was spark when I removed the ground spade connector off the coil, then later there was no spark. I believe the key was on the first time and not the second.
I measured the resistance between the neg and pos secondary terminals, it came up as 3.0 0hms. Is that normal? I looked everywhere for 140 coil specs with no luck.

Tommorow I'll hunt down a good rotor and wires, but should I be looking for a coil, as well? I understand that they are very robust and don't fail that often.

Could someone please post a way to test the coil properly, so I can try to rule it out as a problem or not.....

Thanks for the help!
