<title>[AWD] Found: Replacement Backlight Bulbs for S70 S90 S40 850 960 SC 816 815 Radio -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Here is a web site with a detailed bulb replacement procedure, including clear and annotated photos. It uses the Honda bulbs ($3.50 each), and explains that those bulbs are a perfect fit and require no modification, except for reusing the blue gel cover from the failed bulbs.

<title>[AWD] best v70 year and model -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>This question has been asked and answered on the Brickboard many times over the years.

Recommend you use the search function at the top of the page (look for the red wagon).

I typed in &#x22;best year V70&#x22; and got 241 hits.

Refining your search terms can focus the results for you.

However, you may expect many replies to your query ... with the exception of our resident guru, Klaus, who is away on a road trip.

<title>[AWD] ECCU BLOWER MOTOR - 1998 V70 T5 -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Thanks for the insights, Klaus.

The blower does not make any unusual noises. I have never used RECIRC when heating. Never that cold here in Hampton Roads VA

When this problem has occured, I have moved the fan control from AUTO through the entire range of MANUAL speed settings and back several times. No effect.

I will have a look at the blower and resistor.

<title>[AWD] ECCU BLOWER MOTOR - 1998 V70 T5 -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I have developed and intermittent problem with my HVAC blower motor. On average the blower will not come on at one of every 10 starts.

I have checked the fuse. I have adjusted the ECCU settings into &#x22;manual&#x22; and cycled both TEMP knobs as well as the air location distribution knobs. This has no effect.

Sometimes the blower will start, if I turn off and restart the engine one or more times. Other times, this will not work.

Has anyone else had/solved this problem?

Is there a relay in the system, which may be the culprit? Might it be the blower motor resistor? Is my ECCU beginning to fail?

<title>[AWD] [V70] [1998] Electronic Climate Control system fault -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Please let the FORUM know if cleaning your temp sensor solves your amber blinking light problem.

Mine also blink occasionally, but I don&#x27;t think my temp sensor is dirty. However, I do have some intermittent &#x22;fluttering&#x22; duct dampers, which may cause the amber lights to blink on the ECCU.

The owner&#x27;s manual only says to have the dealer check the ECCU, if the amber lights continue to blink on successive starts. It does not hint at what might cause such a blink. And nobody in his right mind would go to a dealer with this symptom and hope to escape with his shirt.

Incidentally, EBAY has several &#x22;formerly owned&#x22; ECCUs for auction and &#x22;Buy It Now&#x22; at some attractive prices

<title>[AWD] [850] [1997] Odometer Gear -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Check here for a replacement gear:

http://www.odometergears.com/volvo.html

You didn&#x27;t mention that any bulbs had failed. I assume you wish to relamp while the instrument cluster is removed. If so, IPD has the kit:

http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Lighting-&#x26;-Lenses/Dash-Illumination-Kits/p-72-106-549/

However, I expect that others will reply with info on economical replacement bulbs from other sources, e.g. Radio Shack.

Good luck.

<title>[AWD] [V70] [1998] TORCH LIGHT MOTORS IN MY OPNION &#x26;quot;&#x27;BEWARE&#x27;&#x27; -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>If you decide to keep the car, some of your items are DIY:

Front cup holder $109: A replacement from IPD is $65 or $55 (depending on color) and installs easily.
http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S70V70-1998-2000/Interior/Cupholders--OEM-replacement/p-128-370-1827/

Front Head lamp out $22: An H7 bulb is $12.50 from IPD and probably less at your local parts store. Another easy install.

Right door lock $ 271: A new lock mechanism (Volvo p/n 8628224) from your dealer is about $117.97 (in 2005). Excellent installation instructions can be found on Bay 13: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/v70latch1.php
Ignore all that business about the Red Evil Plastic Lever.

Of course, I realize that these are not the big ticket items, but could save you a little cash.

Good Luck!!

P0751 is a generic code applicable to all manufacturers. When a DTC is defined differently depending on the Mfr, the web site spells out those individual definitions.

Copied from the web site:

<title>[AWD] Looking for a BOSCH #608 ECU -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>

<title>[AWD] [850] No Start -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>If you DO NOT have spark or fuel, you may want to check the RPM sensor, a.k.a. Crankshaft Position Sensor. This sensor is a permissive; during a start, the engine must attain at least 2500 RPM, at which time this sensor will send a signal permitting fuel and spark. If it is defective and does not send the proper signal, you can crank all day, and nothing will happen.

It is located at the rear of the engine block at the top of the flywheel on the transmission bell housing.

If this unit is defective, it should set a code.

CODE Fenix 5.2 System
The Fenix 5.2 system is used on the 10 valve non turbocharged 850

PROBABLE CAUSE for Volvo vehicles

<title>[AWD] [S80] [2001] Turbo boost pressure -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Eric,

The latest Moss catalog has a chart on page 4. According to that chart, your max boost is 8 psi, assuming that you are still running stock.

If you have installed the Moss Power Pack (ECU Upgrade and Sport Exhaust), then your max boost is now 14 psi.

<title>[AWD] [V70] 1998 V70R -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I am assuming that you are trying to replace the blades, not trying to remove the wiper arms. Klaus was telling you how to remove the arm.

I just replaced my blades on my 1998 V70 (base), and they did just pop off.

Have a look at the wiper image on the IPD site:
http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?strPageHistory=category&#x26;numSearchStartRecord=0&#x26;strParents=128,369,493&#x26;P_ID=1247&#x26;CAT_ID=493&#x26;V_ID=2429

The shiny rivet is one end of a small bar which is perpendicular to the blade. The bar fits into a slot in the end of the wiper arm. See IPD image:
http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?strPageHistory=category&#x26;numSearchStartRecord=0&#x26;strParents=128,369,493&#x26;P_ID=4467&#x26;CAT_ID=493&#x26;V_ID=11617

Hold the end of the wiper arm firmly and pull steadily on the blade frame. It is only held by friction and should pop out.

<title>[AWD] 1998 V70 T5(M) ENHANCEMENTS -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Some years ago, I did an ECU reflash and Sport Muffler upgrade. The results were more than satisfactory. Double the boost, pleasant exhaust note, great pull through the gears, and a reported HP increase from stock 236 to 285. The best fun is having what appears to be a sedate blue Brick, but running neck and neck with the pimply &#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#156;Fast &#x26; Furious&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#157; crowd at the Interstate on-ramp. They keep looking over at me, unable to understand how this nerdy Volvo station wagon is keeping up with them.

But &#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#166; last week I completed a few additional &#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#156;enhancements&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#157;. I installed the IPD Short Ram Intake, MSD Ignition Coil Upgrade, and Heavy Duty Turbo Control Valve. Words fail me. It is like I just cured my car of asthma and installed an adrenalin injection pump.

While the IPD descriptions of these upgrades are clear that they do not increase HP, I can say with some confidence that the existing HP now arrives much earlier at the party. No more waiting for 3000 RPM to see the boost gauge needle rise. To say that it is exhilarating is an understatement.

I don&#x27;t know if one, two, or all three of these upgrades is responsible for my increase in performance, but it was worth every penny.

<title>[AWD] [V70] Manual V70 T-5&#x27;s in USA? Incredibly rare. -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>So true!!!

I live in SE Virginia. I own two 98 V70 w/manual. I also own a 88 245 w/manual ... not to mention the 67 MGB. All you see is A/T down here.

I bought the first V70 from a dealer near Foxboro Mass.

I bought the second (my T-5M; learned it was for sale on the Brickboard) from a PO on Long Island.

In places where someone else has to drive your car, the young kid has to go find some old guy in the back who knows how to drive a stick shift. Before it gets to that, I always announce loudly that it is a manual tranny and get a few blank stares.

I must be gettin&#x27; old .....

<title>[AWD] [V70] When did Volvo stop selling V70 T-5&#x27;s with manual transmissions in the U.S.? -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I am looking at page 70 of the 2008/2009 IPD Parts Catalog (850/70/S60/S80/XC90/40series/V50/C30).

It has a listing and photos of model years 1994-2008, models, and features.

There is a listing as follows:
S60, V70 MKII; 2001-2007
160 HP non-Turbo with auto or manual trans
197 HP light-pressure Turbo auto trans only
247 HP T5 manual or auto trans
300 HP R models with auto or manual trans
All XC models are light pressure Turb0 and auto trans and AWD

The listing for 2008 V70 models all have auto trans; no T5 models

The listing for 2008 C30 model shows a 6-speed manual Transmission or Optional 5-Speed Geartronic.

If these listings are accurate, it would appear that the V70 T5(M) was available through model year 2007

<title>[AWD] 98 V70 T-5M; IPD Boost Gauge and Pod Design Problem -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I received a reply from Scott Hart at IPD. He admitted that it was a tight fit, but said that he had not received any customer feedback with problems similar to mine.

As I was replying to Scott&#x27;s e-mail, I had an epiphany:

The current gauge has a range of 30&#x22; Hg to 15 PSI. The scale is symmetrical around the &#x22;0&#x22; reading, which is at 12 o&#x27;clock. In that configuration, the nipple is at 6 o&#x27;clock and is affected by the pod back wall, as I described.

However, some upcoming mods (Stage III???) may take me above 15 PSI boost, so I bought a 30&#x22; Hg to 25 PSI gauge from IPD, which is yet to be installed. That increased positive boost scaling drove the &#x22;0&#x22; reading to about 11 o&#x27;clock, with the nipple remaining at 6 o&#x27;clock.

From a visual ergonomics standpoint, I would prefer the &#x22;0&#x22; reading to be at 12 0&#x27;clock. In that way, with a quick glance I know if I am in positive or negative boost without actually having to read a number on the faceplate. I can place the &#x22;0&#x22; at 12 o&#x27;clock by simply rotating the gauge clockwise in the pod. Doing that will take the nipple to about 7 o&#x27;clock, which would buy me more clearance from the back wall of the pod.

OK, so the word &#x22;TURBO&#x22; will be slanted, but who cares.

<title>[AWD] 98 V70 T-5M; IPD Boost Gauge and Pod Design Problem -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>Somehow I knew that Klaus would be the first to see this and reply.

Yep, Step 2 is sending the text to IPD.

A 90 deg elbow would seem to be the logical fix. Perhaps IPD will begin including this part in the installation kit.

After I posted, I thought of a good test to prove my theory. Take an uninstalled pod. Take a boost gauge and install a small length of vacuum tubing. Insert the gauge into the pod, ensuring the correct &#x22;UP&#x22; orientation and have a look in from the A-Pillar side. That should tell the story.

<title>[AWD] 98 V70 T-5M; IPD Boost Gauge and Pod Design Problem -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I apologize in advance for the length of this, but technical problems require technical explanations.

Some time ago I installed a VDO boost gauge and pod in my 1998 V70 T-5M. I ran the vacuum tubing from the vacuum tree up to the A-Pillar along with the electrical wiring for the gauge lamp. I installed the pod, then connected the wiring and tube to the gauge and pushed the gauge into the pod. The fit was snug enough that I chose not to use the included bracket. I felt that this would make a later removal much easier, if I had to replace the gauge lamp or remove the pod in order to remove the upper facia. My prescience was rewarded, when my AC evaporator needed to be replaced, which required a field stripping of the entire front of the cockpit by my indie. But, that is another story.

Following that replacement and the reinstallation of the upper facia, pod and gauge, it seemed that the boost indication was less responsive than prior to the removal. When I pulled the gauge from the pod, I could see that the plastic vacuum tube had crimped where it entered the brass fitting on the back of the gauge. From the location and orientation of the crimp, it appeared that the tube had been jammed against the curved portion of the back wall of the pod. When I pulled the gauge out of the pod about an inch, boost readings were much more responsive in speed and amplitude. When I again seated the gauge, the readings again became less responsive. It seemed clear that seating the gauge was crimping the vacuum line and affecting the readings &#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#166; not unlike crimping a garden hose.

That caused me to find my trusty tape measure to check distances. Here is what I found:
&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#162; The vacuum fitting is located at the 6 o&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#153;clock position on the back of the gauge and near the outside edge.
&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#162; The distance from the faceplate of the gauge to the tip of the brass fitting is about 3 inches.
&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#162; The distance from the face of the pod to the curving pod back wall at the 6 o&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#153;clock position of the brass fitting is also about 3 inches.

I was now sure that there is insufficient space for the stiff plastic vacuum line to make the curve dictated by the shape of the pod back wall at that location. As the gauge is seated, the pod back wall forces the vacuum line to bend and crimp shut.

While VDO manufactures the gauge, I don&#x26;#226;&#x26;#128;&#x26;#153;t think that they make the pod. When IPD mated the VDO gauge to IPD pod, it seems that they overlooked this potential problem of tubing bend radius and gauge-to-pod clearances.

I now keep the gauge pulled out about an inch in order to get accurate readings, but it is very unsightly. I plan to replace the tubing, but I fear that it will result in the same problem for the same reason.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a fix? Is IPD reading this?

<title>[AWD] [V70] [1998] Liftgate Strut removal -posted by- Dave Spriggs</title>
<description>I know that you do not want to hear this, but I replaced the struts on my two 1998 V70s (total four) about a week ago. All were original, so they had been in place for over 10 years. With very little coaxing, they practically fell off. Inside each fitting, the lubricant was still moist. The new ones popped on with hand pressure.

That being said, the design is such that you can put a good bit of muscle on the strut to remove it. You might damage the old strut, but you can&#x27;t do much to the spherical attachment points.

It is possible that the lubricant has dried out and/or there is an accumulation of &#x22;stuff&#x22;, which is preventing the internal circular spring retainers from releasing. Perhaps a small shot of WD40 would loosen things up for you.

Let us know how it goes.
