[RWD] [200] [1984] 84 245 Ti stalling at stop signs/lights -posted by- fishsqueezer

Thanks again, Randy.

I'll spend this evening going through the 700/900 FAQs. Didn't know they were also applicable to the 200 series drivetrain. I'm learning. ;^) My daughter sent me a text msg. this afternoon saying she will call me tonight after her evening class gets out. ---rick

Hi Randy,
Thanks for the response. Just got back in from going over the car some more.

We have only had the car for a couple of years, bought from a volvo mechanic who had recently rebuilt the motor. I've never cleaned the throttle body and don't know if previous owner did when it was rebuilt. If you could explain the procedure I can go through it next weekend. My daughter just left to go back to school for the week and will return next weekend so I can go through a few other checks. Cleaning all the contacts and checking resistance on relays, minor oil leak from oil plug, etc.

While going over it this afternoon, I checked all of the vacuum lines and found a line that had swelled from age and oil impregnation. It was allowing air in around the nipple near the #4 port on the intake manifold. Not sure exactly what it is right now, will look in the manual before I go to bed tonight. I replaced the line with new hose. I couldn't get the car to replicate the problem after that so it may have addressed the problem, not sure. I'm sure I'll hear if it fixed it by the time my daughter makes it back to school or during the week. Keeping my fingers crossed, ---rick

[RWD] [200] [1984] 84 245 Ti stalling at stop signs/lights -posted by- fishsqueezer

My daughter brought her car (84 245 Ti)home from college this weekend and reported that her car keeps stalling when she is pulling up to a stop or just when she begins to accelerate away from a stop (not good when trying to pull across a highway!). I've gone out an ran the car (starts a bit hard) when cold and it idles and runs up fine. I can get it to replicate the stalling condition by putting it under load (brake on, increasing rpms to ~2000, rapidly letting off pedal, dies). The fuel pumps seem fine (jumpered across the fuses to bypass the fuel pump relay) with each putting out a steady hummmm. Checked the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose for hints of fuel to see if the FPR may be failing, with no hint of fuel in the hose. Not sure where else to turn, having searched the forum for previous posts on stalling to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated as she has to drive the car back to school this evening. I can have her return the car next weekend but would like to know she is not endangering herself during the week running between home, classes, and work. ---rick

Thanks for your help, Will.

I was just fixated on the IMAGE URL at the bottom of the message box. The shot of my son is him yelling, just goofing with his mom taking the picture. The pics were originally taken to share with our insurance agent, who also has quite a sense of humor. One of the shots (I'll have to fix this tonight when I get back to my laptop) is supposed to be from the front of the car, not a duplicate of the side.

The stripe above the beltline trim seems original (it's a decal). Everything else on the car is original and I can't imagine the POs doing anything like this on their own. The car originally came from the LA area and the couple retired here to Boise in the early 80's. We are the second owners.

Thanks to all for the kind words, the kudos goes to the son with the patience to work by my side through several weeks of confusion, frustration, and choice words.

As promised, I've uploaded some pics to the gallery and will try to attach them here. As a side note, my oldest son (21 yo) used HIS tools this weekend and, with a buddy, rebuilt his brake calipers. Even used a manual and honed the cylinders! One proud papa here for both boys! ---rick

Could someone please teach me how to upload a pic into a message posting? Nothing seems to be working. Clicking the Image Library (upload/submit) below only takes me to a non-working link.

[RWD] [200] Resurrected 264 -posted by- fishsqueezer

Hi all,
Just wanted to post an update to my latest project. Many thanks to all the posters on the site, to which I've admittedly been a lurker, for sharing their knowledge and experiences.

As some may recall, I purchased a '79 gray 264 from the local High School tech center in late June. Donated car, leaky water pump, all parts removed from top of engine and placed in various boxes (some of which not originally included with car!), nothing labeled. Like putting together a puzzle without a picture. Car has 72K on the odometer, full dealer service records with great maintenance history, fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, a/c conversion completed. I know, it still has the PRV V6 but everything else is in fantastic condition. Total price out the door = $100.

Got my 17 y.o. son involved in the recovery effort as it will be his car (maybe!?). We replaced all of the belts and hoses throughout the engine compartment, flushed the cooling system, flushed the tranny (thanks FAQs), cleaned the screen on the in-tank fuel pump, replaced the all filters and refreshed all fluids, replaced the water pump (run, don't walk from this one if it ever goes out), as well as detailing the car inside and out has left us with a new addition to our fleet. Between the use of the set of Mitchell manual CDs I have, a Chilton's manual, the internet, a local Volvo mech., and the vacuum diagram under the hood, we've been able to put it all back together and finally got it running yesterday. Wiring and vacuum diagrams have proven to be invaluable. Drove the car on some errands yesterday evening and to work today. Runs out terrific, though getting a new battery tonight as the old one isn't holding a charge. All together I've got a little over $500 into the car.

The best thing: My son is excited as it is the first time he has jumped into a project as involved as this one turned out to be and things turned out well. All of the tools he has been receiving over the years for his toolbag will actually see some use after he moves out. He loved the problem solving and getting his hands greasy. He admitted to me yesterday that he always wondered what I saw in doing my own work vs. paying a shop (though sometimes necessary). I think we have a budding Volvo nut. He is already looking at the IPD website and dreaming.

Thanks again for all the advice and shared knowledge. Now I have to find another one for him (a 242 or 244 with a B230?) so I can keep this one for myself. I'll try to attach pics later tonight. ---rick

[RWD] [200] 264 alternator mounting -posted by- fishsqueezer

Hi folks,
Fixed the problem. Was able to fab a bracket similar to the one the dealer had on his parts fiche but still ran into where to mount to the block. Removed the belts from the pulley to let the alt. hang free from the lower bolt and noticed a newly discovered (!!) bolt hole behind the ear of the alternator. The 8mm bolt indicated by the dealer worked great. Now just need to return the too-short belts so I can finish mounting it. Thanks for all the help.

[RWD] [200] [1979] FI Fuel lines -posted by- fishsqueezer

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the information. If anyone gets a price on the Cohline hose please let us know. I'd be in for several meters of the stuff if the price was right. Volvo wants $86 just for this one hose. Can anyone tell me how to fit the banjo fitting onto this type of hose. I have the old section to practice with! ---rick

[RWD] [200] [1979] FI Fuel lines -posted by- fishsqueezer

I want to replace the fuel lines on my '79 264GL. I've read through the archives and determined that I need to get 30R9 or equivalent. Can anyone tell me what the inside diameter (ID) should be? In looking at one of the banjo fittings (the PO was so kind to cut the line just before the fitting! arrgh!)it seems that 1/8" might work. Is this a commonly available size in auto parts stores?

[RWD] [200] 264 alternator mounting -posted by- fishsqueezer

Thanks for the reply. An exploded diagram would be great. Can't find one in the Haynes or Chilton's (I know, but came with the car) manuals. I also looked at the cleanflametrap.com site. Plenty of diagrams for the four-bangers, nothing for the V-6. Don't have that much time or money into the car, has been going together fairly well once I got the parts I was looking for (i.e., new injectors, hoses, belts, vacuum lines, water pump, air/oil/fuel filters, thermostat).

Got the car for a song: $100 purchase price on a car with 72k on the odometer, garaged it's whole life, maintained by the dealer with excellent records most of it's life, it's a beauty. Just need to put it all back together and I'm coming up empty of ideas on the mounting of the alternator. Checked with the dealer, has diagram for the mounting hardware (not on the motor) but the bolt and adjustment arm (in stock) are different than that pictured. Mounting bolt (from dealer) also doesn't fit any of the available holes for mounting. Even had the parts guy come to my house to look things over. He's puzzled too. Nothing in the p/p yard with the PRV (V-6) motor. Is there such a thing as a 9mm bolt? An 8mm is too small and a 10 mm is too big. Tried both fine and coarse thread pitches. Do I need bushings for the mounting bracket? At least I could order those.

What's entailed in the conversion to a I4 motor? Do I also need a new tranny (I have the automatic)? Best options? Do the motor mounts swap right in also?

[RWD] [200] [1989] Advice on stripped bolt removal... -posted by- fishsqueezer

If the above is not possible, you might try and find a friend with a set of Craftsman Bolt-Out sockets/bits. I've used these successfully on many rounded bolt heads from POs. Fairly inexpensive (~$20 set) if you are a Craftsman Club member, they always seem to be on sale. ---rick

[RWD] [200] 264 alternator mounting -posted by- fishsqueezer

I'm a new member here and want to start out by thanking all of you for the wealth of information you are willing to share and post.

I've recently added a '79 264 GL to accompany my '86 245T. I acquired the 264 from a high school tech center where two HS students disassembled the intake and all related lines/hoses/connections (plus some others!) to replace the water pump. They never re-enrolled for second semester so I am trying to put together a puzzle without a picture. Have re-assembled the water pump, replacing all hoses and belts while there, and the intake manifold. I am missing some parts and bolts and need your help.

What does the mounting hardware look like? What sizes are the mounting bolts to the block? How does everything fit together? If someone can provide me with pics or drawings it would be most helpful. I can fabricate any type of tensioning slide bracket if needed. There are several bolt holes in the block, not sure which ones to use. Thanks in advance, ---rick
