[AWD] 850 Crankshaft and Camshaft locks for changing head gasket -posted by- Dal2HS

My mechanic there is Jose Duran...Duran European in the area of Walnut Hill/35. His number: 214.956.6970. Tell him Robert from Arkansas sent you. He thinks I'm CAPABLE of doing the job, but he knows my temper and patience and is discouraging it. He works on all European cars... has helped me with the Rolls-Royce, several Mercedes and my beastly BMW 735i (soon to go to someone else I hope...)

[AWD] 850 Crankshaft and Camshaft locks for changing head gasket -posted by- Dal2HS

I bought the 850 book yesterday. It has great PICTURES of the tools and keeps saying that they're described in the text...but apparently I'm not smart enough to identify exactly what text it is. I found a set on Ebay for $125... Not the name brand but they would work for a head gasket change. I'm still nervous...read through all the steps then felt like a stiff drink.

I'm going to study it some more...then probably put it on a car dolly and take it to Dallas.

[AWD] 850 Crankshaft and Camshaft locks for changing head gasket -posted by- Dal2HS

I downloaded the book for the 850... And don't see the instructions anywhere. Guess I will order the book as they do NOT have it here in Bumfuzzle.

I talked to my mechanic in Dallas...he says I'm crazy for taking this on. Worse that can happen...I get it apart and have to tow it someplace to get it back together.

[AWD] 850 Crankshaft and Camshaft locks for changing head gasket -posted by- Dal2HS

Tomorrow I'm going to challenge myself and ATTEMPT to take the head off of the 850. In one set of instructions I have it calls for a crankshaft locking tool and a Camshaft locking tool. How ABSOLUTELY necessary are these and where can I get them? Keep in mind I'm in a small city (36000) in Arkansas so I can't just run down to the local foreign car parts place. The instructions show a front and rear lock tool for the camshafts.

Thanks for any advise!

[AWD] 850R Where to get Gaskets? -posted by- Dal2HS

Thank you guys for all the ideas on my wagon. I'm looking at several different sites for the gasket sets... In the past everything I've found on IPD has been the most expensive. Alas, the head gasket set and breather kit are much less on IPD than anyone else. Has anyone used their kits? I haven't ordered from them for years but had good service when I did. I see that the kit includes valve seals.

[AWD] 850 R Head rebuild or engine replacement? -posted by- Dal2HS

I went to the mechanic who does all my major Rolls-Royce repairs. He referred me to the machine shop he uses for Volvo/Mercedes/BMW, etc. They are familiar with the engine and will do it for a little over half the price of the places I've found online. It's a little shop over in the back woods that does import engine rebuilding. Who would have known...LOL.

Thank you for your suggestion...I can buy the gaskets, PCV kit and all for the same price just the rebuild would have cost!

[AWD] 850 R Head rebuild or engine replacement? -posted by- Dal2HS

Living in Hot Springs, Arkansas I haven't been able to find any place to do it. If I had a Chevy or Ford I'm sure there would be someone I could find...but I am hesitant to let Bubba Sue's Engine's and Deer Stands do any work on a Volvo cylinder head.

[AWD] 850 R Head rebuild or engine replacement? -posted by- Dal2HS

I spoke with the gentleman at Cylinder-heads.com. He seemed quite knowledgeable about the head...he doesn't have one in stock but can rebuild mine for $450. I think it seems REALLY reasonable. Now if I can just drum up the courage to deal with dismantling mine without therapy...

[AWD] 850 R Head rebuild or engine replacement? -posted by- Dal2HS

Still no compression in the 2/3 cylinders. I am assuming it has a burned valve or some other head problem... I let oil sit in the cylinders and it took several hours to leak down but still no compression.

SO...my big question. Should I seek out a used engine from a car with the same numbers...or should I take on rebuilding the head on this thing. I have never taken on a head r/r before. I have located a couple of machine shops but am really hesitant to take on this two piece head from a bad experience with a 740 16 Valve.

I have located a couple of low mileage units in the $6-800 range. Thoughts? Ideas?

[AWD] Turbos are tough -posted by- Dal2HS

Did an initial oil change and put some oil in the cylinders...slight change but no cookie. Put enough Lucas/Marvel combination in the two cylinders to see it puddle. After a couple of hours it was still visible, so at least that's a good sign that the rings are good (correct me if I'm wrong...)

SO...if this doesn't change anything, I guess it's on to a head rebuild. I am going to get hold of a couple of import shops here and see who does their work. I've found rebuilt heads for it online from $350-650.

Are there any specialty tools that are absolutely necessary to perform this act of love? Can it be done in one day for tear down and one day for reassembly?

I've restored the dash/interior and part of the suspension of a Rolls-Royce Silver Spur, so I do have patience with complicated design.

[AWD] Turbos are tough -posted by- Dal2HS

Wow...this is news... I just put platinum plugs in it. I ran platinum plugs in the 740 Turbo and never had an issue and never read a concern about it. Do I need to replace with Copper plugs? I have never read this before.

I'm HOPING that with some soaking of those two cylinders that I get the compression back. The more I read about the procedure of taking that head off and reinstalling the more I want to hide under a rock...

[AWD] Using RWD wheels in FWD cars -posted by- Dal2HS

I drove the car home...ran rough but even with the 2 cylinders missing, just the least bit on the highway makes the turbo KICK. I have read that the only major thing with the R is the high pressure Turbo and the electronics. I could be wrong though... There is no oil in the water and no water in the oil. There is a pungent smell of gasoline and oil from the leak(s).
I did put oil in the cylinder and tried the comp test again...with no success. I don't REALLY want to have to rebuild the head on the car, but it's a LOT less than finding a motor.

I got this car for $1300. I think it was a pretty good deal. Even if I have to rebuild the head...

The 960 wheels I have are off of a 95+ model. The offset is the same as the 850 wheels...I've seen a number of late 960's with the 850 wheel and the opposite.

The late 960 wheels will NOT fit an earlier car.

When I took the spark plugs out...cylinders 1,4, and 5 looked ok. The 2 and 3 were totally black... I assume that they got soaked with gasoline when they stopped firing. When I got the car, 2 and 3 spark plug wires weren't getting spark. I just can't imagine what is giving 0 compression.

Thanks guys...you're giving me hope!

[AWD] 850 R Compression Cylinders 2 and 3 -posted by- Dal2HS

Just bought an incredible '97 850R with under 100K miles. The car has been sitting a long time...the guy I bought it from bought it with a bad miss from the original owner. The rear cam seal was leaking BADLY and the dist cap was completely corroded inside... I put a new seal and new cap/rotor/wires on. Car still ran terrible. Did a compression check as I know there is a lot of gas in the oil. Cylinders 1,4 and 5 have 160+ and cylinders 2 and 3 have 0...not even a HINT. My mechanic in Dallas (5 hours away of course) says do a combination of trans fluid, Marvel Mystery and a touch of good motor oil...about 1/8 cup in each cylinder and let it sit three or four days, then do a good oil change. I've been around cars with bad head gaskets, and they at least had SOME kind of compression register.
Any advise? I really don't want to put a used engine in it but will as I got it for a steal...the interior is near flawless, the exterior is nice, and I have a great set of chrome directional 960 16inch wheels to go on it. It is white with a black interior.
Thanks ahead of time!!!
