If the car is a Volvo certified extended warrenty car.......and
If you have a record of having the car in to a Volvo dealer for an AWD problem before the extended warrent ran out...... Contact the Dealer and the Volvo District Manager in a written complaint (ask to meet at the dealer to discuss the car/problem). See if they are willing to show you the cars history of service records..(or try a CARFAX search).. and what do the extended warrenty checks of the car entail.
Try to learn the status of the Bev. gear & oil as noted in an earlier e-mail and have that info. available.
I would start with the AWS not working correctly is a "Degration of car Safety."
I suspect the car may have an AWD system control problem, which they did not resolve in checking the car for the extended warrenty sale, etc.....
I am not sure of your family status.......... but if a wife is driving children in that car ............. keep bring "Safety" up with everyone at Volvo.
For your information:
My wife has a 2003 XC (75,000 miles). We also have a fairly long steep drive that curves. I have a 2004 V70 and most often I get about 1/3 the way up the drive and get stuck in fresh snow. My wife pulls around around my car into even deeper snow and continues up the hill. I cannot remember feeling wheel spin in her XC (like I do in my V70) and I do not recall it ever getting stuck.

How many miles on the car?? Bottomline: tire pressure and tread depth should all be the same /equal !!! How did you know the AWD system was not working(4 months earlier... was anything checked out electronically??).
How long (and hard) have you driven the car since the gear (??) noise was noticed. I would see if you could drain the Bev. Gear housing(this site has guidance for doing that). Check the drained oil for metal gear particles (magnet), the amount drained should indicate if there was adequate oil and the viscosity may indicate if it was the Volvo Spec oil. Based on what you determine, you may want to correctly fill with Volvo spec oil and see if you still have the noise......or lucked out.
Good luck

A fully charged battery should read 12.6 Volts. If you measure alternator output at the battery you should see 13.8v or more depending on the state of battery charge.
Have you cleaned the battery terminals and inspected the cable fittings for corrosion in the connector..??
Also check the battery ground cable connection to the car.
If you want more info on batteries, charging and TS problems, see if you can locate the on-line site "Battery University" .

[AWD] [XC] 2003 XC Engine Noise -posted by- afm

Klaus, I am open to all ideas on this one. I checked AT and engine oil.. All at the correct level. 500 miles ago the Bevel gear was drained and filled with new volvo spec fluid. I watched the drain and new fluid fill.
I do plan on dropping the shield and checking the BG fluid level.
I also thought BG when I first heard it.... However it seems you can make the noise speed up faster than the power train is picking (RPM) up with applied throttle. Also, I would think the noise would be worse with warm oil (??) and yet the noise (so far) goes completely away when the car reach full operating Temp.(same position and stable on temp gage).
If you then apply heavy throttle up to full tubo load...... all is quiet and smooth from dead stop to cruising speeds.
Keep the ideas comming, I will re-check level and cleanliness of the BG oil.
Thx.

[AWD] [XC] 2003 XC Engine Noise -posted by- afm

My wife's 2003 XC has 70K miles on it. The weather has turned colder and when the engine is cold and started all sounds normal (at idle). As you apply throttle to pull away you hear a chatter(??)sound that can be made louder or quieter with the amount of throttle being applied. It occurs only under load/accelerating. As soon as you reduce throttle or coast... no noise. . As the engine warms up the noise becomes less audible. With the engine fully warmed up the car sounds normal and the noise can't be created.
Any help is appreciated , as to what it might be and where to look.
If I had to guess at this time it sounds like and air valve chatter??? maybe from the drivers side of the engine???
Thx. Art

[AWD] [V70] [2003] Oil Trap changed lessons learned -posted by- afm

I lifted the hood on the 2004 V70 to "just look". Skip that idea. On all the other volvo's I have owned 240 thru 850, they had an assessible plastic screen to replace. I have not been able to locate a picture/skematic of the oil trap on the V70's so cannot answer these questions...... but since you have gone to the edge of the Volvo universe, maybe you know !!!!
How similar is the v70 oil trap configuration to the old models???? and how it is plumbed??? What did you actually have to repace??? filter screen???
Now that you know how it is configured and what "needed to be replaced or cleaned............ do you think that disconnecting (?) a hose to the trap at a more assessible location ??? and back spraying it with some WD-40??? would work??? Does the design allow for cleaning?????
Bottomline: Do you think there is a simpler approach...... knowing it might not clean as well as what you did, but....................
Thx.

[AWD] [V70] [2003] Oil Trap changed lessons learned -posted by- afm

Thanks for taking the time to write up the effort. It is starting to make me think twice about any more Volvo's (eight of them todate).
How many miles on your V70 when the problem was noted????? (I have a 2004).
Do you think a turbo engine would change the procedure any, after clearing the turbo interferences??? (wife's 2003 XC.
Thks.

[AWD] [XC] [2008] XC70 2008 Rear Rotor Issue -posted by- afm

Based on your comments and the repeated nature of a safety issue (reduced breaking capacity. You should request/demand the Volvo District Rep. be present for an inspection of the braking system, etc. what's wrong, what is the fix and what is the extension on your warrenty, related to their confidence in their fix. Good luck.....

[AWD] [XC] Exhaust system -posted by- afm

Is this a common problem???
I recently noted that both tailpipe hangers (they are next to each other) just forward of the muffler have rusted and detached from the exhaust pipe.
The car is a 2004 V70 (90K miles) and when I checked my wife's 2003 XC (65K), the same two bracket were failed.
Is there a better fix than (per dealer) installing a new bracket and re-welding the support pin to the exhaust pipe????????

[AWD] [V70] 2004 V70 maintenance -posted by- afm

I have read postings on the below and I am looking to confirm that I have the information correct:

2004 V70 : The AW5 transmission hold approx. 8 qts and MOBIL ATF 3309 meets the volvo spec.
The easiest way to flush the AT is removing the upper line to the radiator. How does one disconect that type of fitting??? metal to metal with a green plastic tab?? I hope I have identified the correct line.... upper/driver's side.
Volvo specs use ATF in the steering system... That would be
             MOBIL 3309 ??

Brake fluid is listed as DOT 4, any recommended brands???

Drain plug washers of copper or aluminium??? The newer copper washer seem to need to be tightened excessively to prevent weeping.... any reason not to use the Al. ??? galvanic concerns??

I also have a 2003 XC: I haven't been able to locate a spec. oil for the Bevel Gear fluid. I need to change it soon.

I appreciate any help with the above, Art
