[RWD] [700] [1990] Three relays in three months -posted by- leemillerjr

Could you clarify RSR and CPS? I have a donor car that I can take anything I need. I just need to know what those are. Thanks.

[RWD] [700] [1990] Three relays in three months -posted by- leemillerjr

Update:

A friend and I replaced the fuel pump this morning. It took us just under two hours. I was amazed it took that long, but the triple digits outside I was glad to come in a lot sooner then planned.

It seems to drive fine however the FP relay is still a little warm.

I was able to fix the previously mention "bad relays" (the original relay and the donor relay) following (loosely) the instructions in the FAQ. Thanks to whoever put that in there. So I now have a backup relay just in case something goes wrong.

Here is something interesting though, it seems like the pump we took out of the car is not the original fuel pump to the car. During the removal of the old fuel pump, we found a "pump sock" in the fuel tank. It seemed super old. There were several holes in it. Also, when taking out the trunk carpet, there "just happened" to be a ratchet with the right socket on it to remove the panel in from the trunk. The ratchet is not mine.

Now I am really wondering what I got myself into...

Any thoughts are appreciated. You guys are the best!

I looked and I don't think that there is one underneath the seat. I saw the fuel filter quite clearly and the fuel lines coming out both ends.

[RWD] [700] [1990] Three relays in three months -posted by- leemillerjr

Okay here is the problem. I bought a car knowing that it wasn't running. I had a suspicion that it was the relay. I bought the car, brought it home, took a relay out a car I have that is just sitting around, and it worked... for about a month and a half. I am driving home one day and swerve (a quick right, a quick left) to miss a beach ball bouncing down the road. After the swerve the car dies. I immediately reach down feel the relay (yeah I hadn't put it back together yet) and it is really hot. I let it sit there for a little bit, the relay cools down, and it starts up. I ended up having it towed cause I was too far from my house to really put a lot faith into it.

So today I get a new relay, put it in, and after about 30 minutes it got really hot as well. Here are the symptoms with the new relay. It starts normally on one try, but any pressure placed on the accelerator or putting the car into drive kills the engine. During all of this today there was a gallon (in the red) of gas in the tank. (There is now more gas in it now)

So what is making the relays so hot? Is it the fuel pump going out and pulling to much power?

A note the car I have "sitting around" is the same model, just a year newer ('91). So just about any part I need I think I would have it.

[RWD] [700] [1990] Two random questions (about head and timing belt) -posted by- leemillerjr

My first question it this how difficult is it to replace the head on a B230F? I ask this because I just placed a spark plug insert into the head. If that doesn't work, which I think it will, I want to know if I can fix it myself.

A little more info about my situation. I currently have two 740's one '90 740 GL (the one I am fixing) and a 91 740 which threw a rod (that one is my fault, but that was another post a long time ago). My backup plan, if I have to, is to just take the head off the '91 and place it on the '90.

Before I f'ed up the spark plug thread, she wasn't starting. I drove her to my then current temp job and I came out at noon and she wouldn't start. Since then, I have been able to come up with a couple of theories as to why she was not starting, but haven't been able to test them with the spark plug jacked up.

So my next question is this, how difficult is it to replace the timing belt? While this may or may not be the reason why she is unable to start, she probably needs it replaced anyway. I just bought her about two months ago and don't know much about her repair history. I think I am her 4th or 5th owner.

I found on ipd's site (same place I got the thread tap for the plug) a timing belt kit with instructional dvd as well as a head gasket kit (I know enough to know I would need that).

While writing this it occured to me that I just had the timing belt replaced on the '91 about a year ago. Would it be possible to simply order the dvd from ipd and use the belt off the '91 for the '90?

I know this may not be the best circumstances but currently unemployed and need all the money saving tips I can get.

I also know this is a lot, but you all have never failed me before. Thanks in advance.

[RWD] [700] [1990] I need some help.... -posted by- leemillerjr

Thank you sir,

With your information, it seems that I may have a misfiring problem, but I will check the transmission in the morning.

Would an engine misfiring also be accompanied by some "shuddering" at higher speed 50-55+ mph? (shuddering defined as the feeling of losing power without change in tachometer)

Could you also elaborate on the "fuming" that you mentioned? Would that mean that the exhaust is intermittent?

Sorry for my newbie questions. I do my own brakes, oil, spark plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, and belts, but I am unsure about the jargon of mechanics. I know just about what everything under the hood does and is. I just don't know how to explain the problems I have.

Thank you for helping me formulate a proper question to post on the boards and to search more specifically in the FAQs. Speaking of FAQs, there should be a jargon FAQ for people like me.

Are there any tried and true tests for either of these problems?

[RWD] [700] [1990] Introducing Frigg (for $500) -posted by- leemillerjr

You may have seen my story about Olga (In Memoriam...) throwing a rod and needing a new engine. Well I decided to go with just a new car. However, I wanted to stick with Volvo and hopefully even a 740. I thought that I as long as the new car did not need a block I could use what was on Olga to improve it a little. So condition was not super important. I couldn't do some major stuff, but I could change an alternator or something.

Well, I was searching across craigslist and came across an ad for a '90 740GL the guy was asking $1095. A little more research and found the same add, same person, but he was asking $1500. So, I was kinda thinking this guy was a little desperate. The only catch to it was that it needed a battery. I said, 'I have one of those.' So I called my friend, we grabbed the battery out of Olga and we where on our way to look at the car.

We got there placed the battery in it. She started up, ran for about 2 minutes, and then died. She started again, ran for about a minute, then died. She started up, ran for about 30secs, then died. She didn't start again. The rear back tire was also totally flat. So we would not have been able to take it for a test drive anyways.

My friend and I left. Honestly, I was a little heartbroken. This car was awesome. Grey on Grey leather. Sunroof. 160k. No cracks in seats. No stains in carpet. I honestly considered just living in the trunk it was so clean. But, alas, it would not start. Well my friend convinces me to make an offer on the car. Citing the above reference, "you have a car full of parts." So after that weekend I approached the guy with an offer for $500 cash for the car as is. After (what I think was faking) disappointment with the offer and some lame excuse about not seeing/speaking with his wife till late that night, he calls me not an hour later saying that he will accept my offer.

My friend (same as before) and I go with a car trailer to pick up the car. He brings his air compressor to air up the tire. As he preps the car to be hauled, I am handling the paper work. After we loaded the car and was getting her strapped down, the people we were buying from were standing on their lawn with looks of pity on their faces. Little did they know though that twenty four hours later I would have pity for them.

We got it home. We thought just for kicks we would put the battery in her and just see what happened. Well her started. I had to keep feeding her gas, but she kept going. After taking her around the lot for a little bit, I park her where I want to decide to see if she will idle. I try and she doesn't. I start her up again and my friend notices the battery/alternator light is on and asks what that about. I tell him to look in the manual (yeah it still has the manual and all the paperwork in it) in the glove compartment.

The next day I change the alternator (I also had to change the belt because the old was too big which makes me think it might not have been the alternator at all, rather the belt size, but that has yet too be confirmed).

Long story short (I am tired of typing) I also changed the fuel relay, the original was really bad, and a couple of hoses that Olga had and Frigg did not. I have no idea what they do but at that time I really could not make the situation worse. So after a $500 for the car, 5-6 hours of working/tinkering with the car, and a tank of gas with Heet and fuel injection cleaner. I have an awesome volvo. Probably the best one that I have ever had.

My question to you all might be. What else should I do to her/What else should I look out for? I am taking the better tires off of Olga and putting them on Frigg.

I probably should also put this in the story's board, but I thought it might get more love here. I will try to post a link to some pics here soon

[RWD] [700] [1991] In Memoriam.... -posted by- leemillerjr

Mr. DeWolfe,

I do not want to assume that you are offering it to me for free. If not how much would you like for it? If it is please tell me that specifically. I know this on a public forum. So if you could give me more specific location/area you are at I could make concrete plans to pick up the engine. Please contact me at my email address: lee.therabidbadger@gmail.com.

Thank you so much, Sir.

[RWD] [700] [1991] In Memoriam.... -posted by- leemillerjr

This Friday at approximately 6pm my 91 744 (aka Olga) died. She had an oil leak that I knew about but was not able to get fixed (I am finishing Grad school and currently unemployed). I knew how much to put in and when to put it in. I was traveling on the highway when her oil pressure light came on. "Not a big deal," I thought "this is not the first time. I will put some oil in when I get home and it will go away." That was simply not the case.

Moments later I hear a faint knocking sound coming from the engine. I pull over on the side of the road and place more oil in her (I had just enough oil in then trunk at all times not to make me an oil tanker). I waited a few minutes and began to slowly make my way off the highway. You all probably know what is about to happen. I finally make it off the highway and the knocking stops but is followed by some smoke. There is now a hole the size of a tennis ball between her oil filter and her water pump.

Well, I just needed to tell some people who would understand what I am going through. I tell my friends and they think "well just go get a new car." You simply can't replace a car that you have had since your junior year of High School. She wasn't my first, but she was my longest.

My first was an 85 Volvo 740 GLE. I had some fun times in that car... Anyways I have babbled long enough. Thanks for listening to my story. I know I somewhat caused it, but I was just doing what I could at the time.

On a totally unrelated note, anyone know if there is a Volvo club in the Tulsa Area?
