[RWD] [120-130] VINTAGE PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT -posted by- benski

All the posts here appear to be absolutely on the mark. This isn't the first one of these, by any means. I, too, have seen people get their products in an extremely timely manner, and also people wait for more than a year. It would seem to me that John needs to step up the amount of competent help he has around his shop. I think this is the only way to really grow his business, if he is interested in making and keeping more customers. I'd like to do business with him, I think he has some very neat products in his product line, but I don't have the patience to be one of his "forgotten".

[RWD] [200] [1990] chase the threads periodically -posted by- benski

That is a cool (if pricey) tool. It is also a far sight tidier than going through the whole Heli-coil excersise. One other thing that I have found exceptionally handy for installing the new plugs is a boot from an old set of plug wires. Slip your boot on, lube your threads on the plug, and install your plug in your freshly cleaned spark plug hole, and smile at "how easily it all just falls together". For my hand size, I find it an absolute and inexpensive lifesaver for putting these in, especially number 4, back there in the far recesses of the engine compartment.

[RWD] [200] [1982] No key - best way to open 240 trunk? -posted by- benski

Okay, this is brutal. Is the trunk of the car worth saving? If not, I see a 3 ft. long crowbar in your future or a drill motor and drill bits to drill out the lock. Other than that, as already stated, you may be able to access the bolts for the hinges from inside the car with the back seat removed.

[RWD] [200] [1990] antiseize on the new plugs also -posted by- benski

Too true! I forgot to mention that in my response. The other thing that is handy is to once a year take the time to back off the plug and re-torque it. That way the little darlings don't have too long to develop a strong bond with the head.

[RWD] [200] [1984] Prognosis -posted by- benski

It is most unfortunate that VW (the manufacturer of your engine) didn't build these engines as stoutly as we all would have liked. They built them to a certain price point and they were used in light delivery trucks and some were obviously sold to Volvo. You may be at just the tip of the iceberg here as far as the maintenance needs of your engine (seals, gaskets, hoses, etc., etc.) and sound like you are at a very steep part of your learning curve wrench-bending wise as well. If your go for it approach doesn't get you where you want to go, and you like Volvos as cars, there are a bunch of gas powered ones out there that get reasonably good mileage, you can find parts for, and may suit your current mechanical expertise better. Just steer clear of any gas V-6 cars, as they share similar traits with the Diesel as far as being mostly a red-headed stepchild for parts and maintenance support.

[RWD] [200] [1990] 2 tight plugs...... -posted by- benski

You might try slithering a little Kroil or PB Blaster down in the hole. And, incredibly enough, I have SOMETIMES had luck tightening the plug just a smidge before trying to loosen it. Anything that you can do to break that bond between the aluminum head and whatever coating is on the plug will help, obviously. You might even try warming up the engine and spray a little of that freeze spray that's used for finding cold solder joints in electronics boards onto the base of the plug. Otherwise, I see some heli-coil inserts in your future. Good luck!

[RWD] [200] Mystery rims - anyone know what model these are? -posted by- benski

If you like the "turbine wheel" look, you might investigate some original Volvo wheels called "Coronas". In addition to being 15s they are some of the lightest factory mags that Volvo has produced. The same caveat applies about getting the center caps for these wheels as well. Good luck! Hey! Put that BBS catalog down!

[RWD] [120-130] [1966] Installing a modern audio system into a Vintage Volvo -posted by- benski

Since I'm turning my 130 into a true two-seater, I have removed the rear seat and seatback and installed a bulkhead made out of 3/4" void-free plywood between the trunk and passenger compartment. In it are 2 10s, 2 5' mid-range, and 2 tweeters. But getting back to your question; I would think that you could have some fiberglass "enclosures" made up that would fit in the kick panels and clear the hood release and dimmer switch. I saw an episode of Muscle Car on Spike TV that featured this very tasty solution to an all too common problem. Failing that, maybe a custom car audio place might have some supplies or ideas. These darn 122s are so small, there isn't much room to play with lots of components, especially in the dash area!

[RWD] [200] Exhaust hangers -posted by- benski

Those hangers can be pretty humbling, indeed. IPD sells a very handy installation tool that takes a lot of the frustration out of stretching those darn things. Fairly cheap thrills, and in my opinion at a fair price. I guess you could always make up your own with some 1/4'' or 3/8'' round stock and an acetylene torch as well.
