<title>[RWD] [700] [1990] 3/16 headliner -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>I used the IPD kit with the 1/8&#x22; material. It came with 3 large spray cans of 3M adhesive, and I used less than two cans. My wagon has a sunroof, and the IPD instructions were good. BE SURE YOU DON&#x27;T CUT THE SUNROOF HOLE BEFORE TOU PUT THE HEADLINER BACK INTO THE CAR! I did, and had to scrounge for a wider trim, because I cut the opening about an inch too close.

Also, I second the note about cleaning off the old foam well. It&#x27;s not difficult: I used a stiff nylon-bistled scrub brush, vacuuming as I went.

Be careful in removing the plastic trim: those old interior parts get brittle!

All in all, it was well worth the effort; it looks 100% better, and I quit getting orange foam dandruff!

<title>[RWD] conditioning leather seats -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>I heartily recommend the Lexol products...and they&#x27;re not expensive. I prefer to stay away from aerosol products or surfacing products.

Lexol makes two products: a cleaner (orange bottle) and a conditioner (brown bottle). Both are excellent, when used as directed. They&#x27;re Ph balenced to maintain the Ph level of new leather.

They will NOT repair cracks, crackling, or cuts and tears.  We had an old saying in the leather business: &#x22;Dead cows don&#x27;t heal.&#x22;

Hope this helps. You should be able to get a bottle of each for under $20 total, enough for several applications.

<title>[RWD] [700] [1989] 1989 745 cruise control -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>No, no false warnings yet. It&#x27;s just that with a car that&#x27;s 21 years old, and sat for months before I picked it up, it has the usual corrosion issues in the sockets and connectors. Also, of course, it finicky about matched bulbs. I&#x27;ve started replacing both the right and left bulbs, if cleaning the socket doesn&#x27;t work. After all, if one bulb fails, the other is syuspect, right?

<title>[RWD] [700] [1990] Cheap multimeter.... -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>I got a cheap multimeter at Murray&#x27;s/O&#x27;Reilley for $14.95. So far, it&#x27;s saved me hours of grubing around with a test light, and shown me two &#x22;low voltage&#x22; situations that would light a test lamp, but not power an accessory.

<title>[RWD] [700] [1989] 1989 745 cruise control -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>On that trip back from Chicago, I spent a lot of time in cruise (ain&#x27;t toll roads great at night?). The cruise functioned well, until I had to signal for a right merge/turn or dim the headlights. Then the cruise would cut out as though I&#x27;d tapped the brake. The resume feature would then work fine, if a little sluggishly.

Does this sound like a short in the wires in the stalk or column, or is there somewhere else I should look first? NOT an emergency, just a minor annoyance.

Thanks,

<title>[RWD] [700] [1989] Endurance run (sort of)... long, no questions included -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>Two weeks ago tomorrow, I set off from the Detroit area to a dealer north of O&#x27;Hare airport in the Chicago area.  I was taking my son and daughter-in-law to check over, and hopefully pick up and drive home, a 1989 Mercedes &#x22;Baby Benz.&#x22;

We went over in Brigitte, my &#x27;89 745 GL. Everyone was a little concerned about the trip, but Brigitte performed beautifully. Even through the eternal, inevitable construction zones, she never overheated, even with the A/C on and the sunroof tilted open. After all, she&#x27;d made it back from Annapolis in February, when we picked her up, with the overdrive not operating.

Since picking her up then, she&#x27;s had new disks and pads all around, a new headliner, an IPD ovedrive bypass, and a spare tire/rim that seemed to be missing when we bought her, plus a filled-in tool kit (never used yet).

Got to Des Plaines, and uncovered a couple of problems with the Merc; most obviously a DOA right rear window. After negotiating a 10% discount from the price, they bought the car, and we started home. Needless to say, we were well stocked with motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and tools. THEIR car came with TWO spares, both on matchinga alloy wheels, but no Mercedes jack.

Anyway, we left at the same time, and had agreed NOT to try to convoy from Chicago to Detroit. John wanted to go by way of South Bend, where he&#x27;d grown up, to show his wife his old &#x22;stomping grounds.&#x22; I elected to avoid the skyway on the way back, and used the Induiana toll road most of the way.

Brigitte held up admirably, except for the occasional smell of hot oil. No warning lights, chacked oil level at every gas stop (thanks, Irv Gordon!) and had to add 1 quart each way. Apparently most lost through the oil fill cap gasket, now replaced. I was most impressed at the gas mileage on her first rubb at highway speeds since we adopted her: 27.54 mpg round trip, over a run of 627.4 miles.

Sure glad I was in a Volvo, especially for comfort and driver endurance...I wouldn&#x27;t have wanted to drive that in my wife&#x27;s Kia Optims. The seat adjustments just aren&#x27;t up to the 745&#x27;s.

(I will admit I was continually playing &#x22;The Ride of the Valkyries&#x22; at high volume after dark, to stay awake.)

Almost ready to take her on an up-north camping trip

<title>[RWD] [700] [1989] One GOOD Volvo parts department... -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>After a very discouraging trip to a local PNP, I resorted to phone ordering a couple of parts from our local Volvo dealer. The first order was for a gasket for the oil fill cap (P/N 940096). Not in stock, but ordered, and arrived within 2 business days as promised. Less than $5!

Later, ordered the tool kit holder clip (in stock) for the wagon, P/N 1224832-4 ($0.50) and the clamp for the console armrest (not in stock) P/N 6847246-3 ($1.12). Again, arrived as promised. $1.72 is a cheap fix for two annoying rattles.

Thanks to the BB for the part number on the tool kit clamp. Maybe the other numbers will help someone else.

Anyway, I can&#x27;t call my local dealer anything but courteous and cooperative.

OTOH, my son just bought an &#x27;89 Mercedes 190...the local dealership would only quote a price to order a speedometer cable, wanted payment in advance, and would NOT give him the part number, &#x22;as a matter of company policy.&#x22; He found the correct part at a local import car parts store for half the dealership price!

Once again, YMMV, I guess.

<title>[RWD] [700] [1988] 18 MPG With AC On Versus 23 MPG AC Off -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>Guess I&#x27;ll count myself luck...the latest fillup gave me 21.06 mpg, with AC on most of the time. This is a combination of mostly local driving, with a couple of 70-mile Interstate commutes per week.

The power loss IS noticeable, though.

<title>[RWD] Im thinking of buying a 740 turbo -posted by- Harryl</title>
<description>No help on the turbo, but we bought an 89 745GL wagon in February. Items fixed since then:

No fourth gear - used OD bypass
Headliner was in shreds, and shedding &#x22;foam dandruff&#x22; - re-covered headliner
Sudden coolant loss - garage replaced heater control valve
Got home with car (600 miles) and found that there was no spare rim or tire!
Today, had to have four-wheel brake job...rotors and pads

For a list of items to check, go to the top right corner, and select &#x22;700/900 FAQ&#x22; and look up &#x22;Buying a used 700/900&#x22; for an excellent checklist!

Post back and let us know what happens!
