[RWD] [700] [1992] 740 Turbo cut out at WOT -posted by- asc325is

I guess I should clarify:

The car drives fine under NORMAL condition. This only happens under full throttle around 4.5k.

If i keep the boost low, and keep the car in first, I can hit the red line no problem, but if the engine is under atleast (according to the gauge) 3/4 boost, the gauge goes to full vacuum, the engine loses power, but the RPMs stay high and the car drives on (it doesnt lose speed)

This happens in all gears.

I took off the AMM to turbo hose (Volvo part 3514480) and noticed the under side of the hose right next to the turbo connection is very thin and extremly flexible.

No smoke, smooth idle (just under 1000) perfect under normal driving conditions.

This change anything? I got a good deal on the hose from my local indie, Im putting it on tomorrow in hopes this fixes the problem.

Any additional thoughts are welcomed!

[RWD] [700] [1992] 740 Turbo cut out at WOT -posted by- asc325is

No black smoke, thats why i was thinking the hose from the AMM Volvo part 3514480. I think it's "squishing" and closing up at full throttle and boost.

I do not have an air compressor, or Id try this.

The car is OK if i do not have boost running, or I am not at full boost at higher RPMs, also why Im thinking of the hose.

[RWD] [700] [1992] 740 Turbo cut out at WOT -posted by- asc325is

The engine cuts out at full throttle on my 740T wagon. It gets to about 4500 RPM, and the engine cuts to idle, but if i take my foot off and give it gas, its fine.

Could this be the hose that connects the MAF to the turbo?

Dont get axles!!!

My SB links broke after like 3k miles. Ive had enough of FCP, their parts, and their rude "You must not know what you're doing" attitude towards returns for faulty parts.

If you buy from them, I would get OEM Volvo

Steely: I've disconnected the battery several times (to clear CEL, lol) Wouldn't this reset any codes?

Klaus: I saw 3 at my local pick a part a couple of weeks ago, and I thought about getting one. I know what I'm doing this afternoon! Do you think they will take my wallet for a ride with the used part as well?

Id say out of 5, Im a 3 star mechanic, so I think this is do-able. Also, there was a unit attached to the 97 at the yard, Im thinking about snatching that up too!

[AWD] [850] [1997] ABS pump -posted by- asc325is

OK. So i took my unit off and sent it to victor last year. He fixed it, and sent it back. My abs light never went off and Ive been too lazy to look into it. Now that Im selling the car, Id like the light off. I took it to my local indie, and plugged in and said that the computer is reporting a stuck valve. Im assuming this means I need a new ABS pump.

I am also assuming this is an expensive dealer piece.

Should I trust pick a part?

How easy is the job to replace the pump?

[AWD] [850] 850 Fender Removal -posted by- asc325is

Ok, so Im getting ready to sell my 850 (check the brickboard classifieds if you're interested!!!) Im going to try to "repair" a small dent in the drivers side front fender. Ive done a little research here, and Ive found that the fender is just bolted on ( 2 in front, 3 on top, 2 on back) and has the wheel well and mud flap held on with the famous little plastic rivets ( gotta call the dealer, right?)

Anything I should expect/take care of while Im in there?

This seems like a pretty straight forward removal.

Thanks!

[AWD] [850] [1997] P0455 -posted by- asc325is

Hi all.

Last week I got a check engine with a P0455 Code. The large Evap System leak.

I pulled the battery out to check the canister under the tray, all seems fine. No vacuum lines disconnected anywhere.

I put the battery back in, and no light. Its been 6 days since I put it back in and nothing. But I dont think its over yet.

Here's the dilema: I can't fill my fuel tank all the way to full. The fuel seems to come up the pipe and stop the nossle. The gauge also seems to fluxate quite a bit. It will show 12 gals one minute and 6 the next, then back to 12.Im pretty sure this means theres a leak in the system.

The car was like that when we bought it a year ago, but never thought anything of it. I also think this is attributing to my poor gas mileage ( 19 city 25 higway)

So here's the question: Where do I look now? Fuel tank for broken Lines? Could it be the sender unit?

[AWD] [850] [1997] Considering purchasing a 97 850 GLT and need advice -posted by- asc325is

Depending on where you are located, you have to worry about the AC system. The evaporator likes to start leaking and trust me, it is NOT a cheap fix.

As far as the mileage, ask for a carfax. Chances are, the odometer has stopped working due to a broke gear inside the instrument cluster, it's an easy fix, but if it's broken, its harder to get the actual mileage.

If you hear creaking or cracking in the front suspension, you'll be looking to replace the spring seats and/or strut mounts.

As far as mileage, I have a 97 NA with a 5 speed, and down here in the HEAT Im onlye getting about 26-28 on the highway and 19 or 20 around town. Not terrible, but it gets better without the AC running full blast.

Expect to put atleast $1000 into it after the purchase, unless it's immaculate. And budget $1000 a year after that.

Good luck, and let us know what happens!

[AWD] [850] Hard/no start -posted by- asc325is

Hi all. I have a 94 850 with a new battery. here' the story

Last week, went to start the car after it had sat for the weekend. Lights came on but they were low. Tried to start and nothing happened. Pulled the trusty 97 up next to it and jumped it, started like a champ! let is charge up, drove it around the block several times and then went on my way. The car acted normal for 2 days tne the battery was dead so I replaced it. Now 2 weeks later, the battery is dead again and I had to jump it!!

Sound like an alternator problem? ( i hope!) and not one of those electrical "gremilns"?

Thanks for the help, as always

[AWD] [S70] So no s70 turbo manuals eh? -posted by- asc325is

NO 850 Turbo came to the states with a stick from the factory.

Can't find one! Its a shame, Ive got a NA 5 speed and I LOVE IT! I can only imagine what it would be like with all those extra horses!

As far as gas mileage, for some reason (im thinking the excessive use of my AC here in Texas) My mileage is, how do you say, horrible

In the city, i run usually less than 20 ( in summer) slightly higher in the cooler seasons. I run about 24-26 on the highway in the summer time.

Some people report mileage as high as 30 or more on the highway with a 5 speed. I guess I got the short end of the stick ( no pun intended of course)

Maintenance is similar, but I know that the seal at the oil return line leaks a lot on the turbo models.

[AWD] [850] Mileage drop after new plugs -posted by- asc325is

I recently changed my NKG plugs to the volvo blister pack for my 850.

I noticed a drop in mileage, as in 2 to 3 mpg on the highway and 3 in the city.

Any idea why the blister pack plugs would decrease fuel efficiency?
